what about it??

it's yellow, it's compact, it's urban....it's urban??? what does that mean?? I guess if you had a band playing on an 'urban' street corner for change, then maybe this kit would be a good choice...??? or maybe 'urban' clubs all have small stages?? hmmm....

seriously, though...I think that if you were doing alot of gigging in tight spots...this kit would probably be wonderful. Otherwise, I'll stick with my full-size tubs

Hip Gig

I used the Hip Gig kit for a few gigs. It sounds good, but not great.

The reason they call it an urban kit - is becuase all the drums pack into the bass drum and all the hardware packs into the throne. So in theory even with a cymbal bag you can fit everything on a bus or in a taxi. However, when you try to carry it all in one trip it gets pretty heavy - so you better hope the walk to the bus stop ain't too long.

Also, the smaller size drums produce a sound better aimed at funk/hip hop (urban) vs. rock & roll.

Maybe jazz cats in New York get to the gig by bus or taxi, but I'm thinking most of us need a car anyway. Candidly, when set up - it is still a 4 piece kit - so you really don't save much space on stage.

I think the Mapex Voyager is a better deal for a small kit. It sounds about as good and cost much less.

I tried one of these out, and was very surprised how good they sound. The kick in particular had a very nice tone for such a small diameter. A good solid thwump. The toms sound surprisingly good too. The snare is not very meaty. It has a thinner, piccolo snare type sound. On the other hand, it gave a realy nice sharp "crack" that really stands out.

Don't expect this kit to sound like a full size kit. But, if you are looking for a good, unique sound and don't need thundering drums, it is worth checking out. Especially if you gig a lot and are tired of 5 trips to your car to get all the pieces-parts of a full sized kit. I think it would be great for a hip hop or funk sound.

I didn't see this until after I posted my reply! Looks like two votes for hip hop/funk on the Hipgig.

thnx for feedback

used to have a rock set then got into turntablism.

is there a site for this ?

I'm sure Mapex has a web site (I don't have a link for you).

The Voyager is part of the V-Series (used to be called the Venus Series).

I would think if you go to the Mapex site, and look under either V-Series or Voyager you should find it.

I would want to complete the look by adding some blinking lights, a couple antennas and some NASA insignias. :D
