"The Payment" - a classic horror story re-told

story:
it's a little ditty about 2 brothers and a lycanthrope.......

it's loosely based on the original wolfman movie, the one where larry talbot gets bitten by the werewolf, and he see's the pentagram in his hand; he knows he's phucked, so he goes to the old gypsy woman who knows about these things, to find a cure, and she basically tells him the only thing for him to do, is to kill himself......
what a bum deal.

anyway, these 2 brothers have been partying all night, drunk as skunks, and one of them staggers out into the moor, and proceeds to meets his maker.

the remaining brother wants revenge, but has sobered up now, and has figured out that he'd better get some kind of ammunition...

....so he goes to see the gypsy-witch, to get some aconite (wolfsbane) and a spell here and a prayer there, and believes that he's well prepared, and he goes out to the moor to get his revenge.

but that's not what he gets......

“The Payment”
Written by RF Gilliland

Nightime, on the moor
drank up all the mead
mist is in the air
full moon, did the deed.

never saw the evil...
that poor ole son of a bitch
felt the claws that gripped his throat
yeah, he was dead without a twitch.

"it's your brother down on the moor,
with his head down at his feet!"

drink the aconite, tonight
toast the witches curse
pray to whoever you believe in
to pass over you the worst

it's your brother on the moor,
with his head down at his feet
and the debt has not been paid in full
will you, your maker, meet?

run into the moor
and see the evil eye
upon you, cast a glance,
and the payment, it is nigh.

this is a song i wrote almost 10 years ago...

This is amazing. Really need to check out that sansamp bass DI. Sounds awesome and I really enjoy this tune. Would listen to an album of this for sure.

Also intrigued by this. Please elaborate :):

washing machine used as a bass drum track

HEHEH

turkeyoverlord,

the washing machine is in the beginning..
i miced up the machine with a close mic, and pounded on it with my fist...
then later, i dropped a kick sample on top of the beats, and added it in with the machine beats, mixed low.

then, later during the spooky part, i added it in here and there, it takes careful listening to find it, but it's there.

Do you re-record this every october? I feel like this is the... third time I've seen it?

thanks for listening and commenting!
happy halloween!!

XLR
thanks, this particular set of tracks is using a combination of miced tracks and DI from a Palmer PDI-09 unit.

heheh, "Aconite".

not easy to sneak into a lyric.....

around here, they call it "Monk's hood".

652px-Aconitum_variegatum_110807f.jpg

and it's quite pretty...

but it is also called "Wolf's Bane", which was too obvious for the lyric!
in old times, they used to use this to kill wolves.
it means 'without struggle'

which seems appropriate and somewhat ironic, eh?

Holy crap, what an epic last 1:30 of the song! Performance is tight on everything, I don't hear anything out of place. I hope that isn't you playing and singing everything, because if it is, I hate you :D

What a great, dense, powerful mix, I really like it. I cranked it and my ears are ringing a bit, it had the whole basement shaking with that low end energy.

Once the intensity ratchets up, the guitars overtake the drums in volume, and I REALLY want to hear the drums more and the guitars less at that point in the song.

tadpui

man, you get it...
it's all building up to that last minute and a half.
LOL

and yes that's me doing the lot.
even the drums, i played in real time on a keyboard...
with a little overdubbing of toms and cymbals....

the mix is really meant to be played loud, to get the ominous effect, you need to rattle the windows just a bit....
some of it does not translate as well loud, though, i guess that's where the guitars are getting too loud.

of course, i really wanted them to dominate at that point, even at the mercy of the drums, so maybe it's just a subjective choice about the mix at that point...
but i like the feedback on it, makes me re-think stuff, maybe it IS better with the drums more intense at that point.

check out the vid version, and see if the sound holds up.
it was downconverted to 192kpbs mp3, i think it fails on the sound stage.....

Must be a lot of twisted dudes out there to be able to find all those pics. Really works. Tune rocks.

That's just nasty. There's a lot to like about that song but the production and performance outshines it. Great playing, nice sounds -I really liked the bells towards the beginning, and very well put together. I listened to the video and it really kicks ass.

dm60

no sh!t, right?!
LOL
i found a lot of even creepier images, than the ones i used...
but i had to edit out the ones that just didn't have the right flavor.
some of it was a little too modern, which seemed to make it a bit campy.

thanks for listening, and commenting

rpm61

thanks for listening...

yep, nasty.

the bells, yes, that is a prayer bell that i was given...
i was just striking it with a stick, on the syncopated parts of certain measures.

some people just miss it altogether...

it kind of marries the idea of the evil and the spiritual together, even if a bit subliminally.

it was really fun to track this tune...

i've got like 40 tracks...
and just went everywhere with it..

i've got 6 and 7 tracks of nothing but feedback going in certain places....
amp was just vibrating, and singing, and doing it's own thing.

all i had to do, was be there, and capture it.

the screams with the guitars, the slashing of the werewolf, all visuals i tried to realize directly thru the guitar.

when you have a story that is so strong, the visuals are in the brain so accutely, it's really easy to tap into that as a source of inspiration, and if you know your rig as well as i know my rig, it's dirt easy to get it to talk..
to annunciate..

to animate the ideas flowing thru the synapses, directly into the strings from the fingers....

even the acoustic treatments, were meant to feel a bit menacing....

a decision to drag a pick across the strings from the top to the bottom, versus the other way...
every stroke of it was conceived in advance, trying to evoke a feeling that would transcribe into a wonderfully wicked feeling vibe.

i mean, it's a phukin' werewolf song.
