Were should I place my amp for good room aucostics in a room like....

I have a room like this

I have high ceilings, about 15 feet and each wall is about 15 feet accross,

one wall is half open to the livingroom adn then that corner has a loft with steps that takes up half that northern wall,

Right now I have all my gear lined up on the South wall adn the amp in teh corner of teh south/east wall.

I dont knwo the characteristics of what tends to make a good sound room with vibrations, sop could you give me some suggestions on starting points?


Is there anyway I can post a pic here? I drew one but when I posted this it took out all teh spaces and it looked like mush, it threw it all together,
 
Is your room really a 15' cube? That is an acoustic nightmare. Generally corners and the dead center of the room are the worst places for the amp or mic (but sometimes not). So that leaves everything else as a possiblity. It can also help to raise the amp or cab off of the ground with a chair or milk crates or something.

if you are extremely close micing the amp, how much effect will the room have on the sound?.......

That's probably a question for John Sayers, but I'll take a stab and say enough to make a difference. Much less if using an iso booth, obviously. Sound doesn't stop reflecting just because the mic is closer.
 
You'll get a bass heavy response with the amp in the corner. That's fine if it's what you want, but it can muddy up the low end in a hurry.

Use the milk crate idea or a short speaker stand and move it out of the corner.

The standing waves in your room will be a nightmare without some treatment. There is a formula you can probably find over in the Studio Building and Display forum that will allow you to pinpoint the most troublesome frequencies for the dimensions of your room.
 
should I put my amp on the EAST wall facing the West wall and the opening for the living room?
 
You should place it in a position at an off-angle to any one wall in the room (out of the corner) and hope for the best.

I have heard of close miking the amp in a corner with the amp facing the corner with the mic in front of the cone with the amp tilted up slightly with a blanket thrown over the amp/mic. I haven't tried it myself, but from an acoustic standpoint, it makes sense.

You have difficult acoustics to work with. You'll have to try different placements and see what works best for you. Phase cancellation and standing waves are the biggies.

Try the corner trick first and tell us how it turns out.
 
Sorry, im kinda slow sometimes, but by off angle you mean NOT facing an angle like a corner right? So should I have it face another striaght wall?

Should I have it face the stairs? The stairs are at all different angles, so would that improve sound or kill it?

Also should I have it facing the livingroom opening so the sound waves dont bounce off teh walls so easily?
