Go ahead and kick me..........Looks (cause it don't sound) like I smoked a output tranny. Or something else.... I was enjoying an afternoon jammin to some Jimi via the freshly set up Strat and the Marshall dsl 100. Everything was fine, I had amp set pretty much 12 o'clock and suddenly ...... no sound and the smell of burnt electronics. . oh didn't I say go ahead and kick me? I think the POWERBRAKE ate my tranny. Amp powers up but no sound. I hope some other problem but I fear the worst. Have call into tech. Tried different cabs, tested existing cab it is working, checked cables, checked guitar, all ok. Thank the lord I have backups. . Spare me the "I told ya so stuff on the powerbrake" Off to E-bay it goes. Maybe it is time to Voodoo mod the thing and get it overwith. I hope today bodes well.

doesnt dsl have a seperate fuse for the high vot line to the outputs???? check it seems to me it does.... if your lucky that's all... rarely will an output tranny roach... and for give me but you generaly gotta be doing something stoooooopid...

Dude thank you for sayin that. I am off work now and will check. However, if the high power was "off" would the tube heaters and filaments and such be working??? I'll check. I suspect my neighbors are secretly gleeful. LOL. Note to neighbors: Mesa Boogie in storage no longer. :D :D

The bad news is that that smell usually means a fried transformer, but the good news (if you'll look at it this way) is that if the tube heaters and the power light work, it's probably the output tranny and not the power tranny, so it's not the most expensive single component in your amp that blew up.

"That smell" could be a number of blown components. Could be a fried transistor, cap, diode, lots of stuff.

According to what I could find on the web about that amp, it's an all tube design, so no transistors. If there are diodes in the power supply and they blew, the mains fuse would go, ditto for filter caps shorting. Also, he was running the amp BTTW into a static load when it blew up. My money's on the output transformer.

Thanks to all for your positive and helpful comments. Now............... a short anecdote: Once upon a time I was paid to swing from trusses, listen to and mix really loud music at venues both large and small. One aspect of my employment obligations was to maintain a full back-line of gear for touring professional musicians. Alas, those days are past. AND ALONG WITH MY F****ING BASIC COMMON SENSE. A blanking fuse!!! ptl.

Thanks to the kind soul who delicately and diplomatically directed me in the right direction.. back in the day, I would fire myself for the oversight. Had backup. so maybe a reprimand. Now I just display my stupidity for all, and do what I am told most men don't. I ask for directions. Thanks guys. WS (aka Thurgood).

Glad to hear that, but if you smelled something and/or saw smoke (didn't you?) then your problems may not be gone for good.

That said, repeat this mantra with me, "check the simple stuff first, check the simple stuff first, check the simple stuff first..."

Now, I only wish I would do that. ;^)

G Gunn you may be right. Other problems lurk.. Could be smell of hot amp.?? Very hot amp. Very, very hot amp.... I hope.........thanks guys. We will see/hear after work. now off to youth court. Small child attacks security guard.

Oooh, I hope the security guard wasn't hurt. ;^)

6 year old child broke his sunglasses. What the F***. If I were a security guard/cop I would be ashamed. Alas a continuance.
