I don't know shit about production but you might think the songs are OK. Or not.

I found the nowhere title process a bit confusing and the song titles have come up as the original working names we gave them at the studio. Oh well. The second track is a bit more refined, but that's only relative.

First one is called Loving On The Edge and the second is Change Your Mind Back.

Loving on the Edge

This is very cool. That chorus is KILLER! Very retro sounding in style. Don't know what it reminds me of, maybe a cross of Harlequin and Heart. Really nice. Like the drums, very nice cymbals, bit better definded kick, as well as louder would hurt.

The guitar is a bit weak in the recording. It needs more power. I sort of hear a dab of doubletracking, bring the volumes up on them, especially the right channel.

Interesting singer. Good pitch control and melodic.

Change

Had to listen to another since I liked Loving on the Edge.

Again in similiar style. You got the drums good on this to. Like the toms, very full sounding. This one borders on country almost, but not totally. Both of these are definetly old school. Singer is reaching for notes in places, but overall on the mark.

Two great tunes, but Loving on the Edge I like more. Nice!

Emeric you are both kind and wise! Brightened up a horrible London morning.

The singer's my girlfriend - I got into all this a couple of years ago because I like her voice so much and thought she needed some songs written for it.

Since doing those we've recruited a proper guitarist so it will improve.

Not bad at all, I also like Loving on the Edge best. There are some pitch issues in the vox on Change. I'd like a little more guitar on both of them. The bass is ok and the drums need a stronger more defined kick. I like Edge quite a bit actually. The singer has a fairly nice voice. It sounds as if she's still finding her voice so you have to be a slavedriver and make her sing constantly 'till she hates you. Well, maybe not that much but I'd be very interested in hearing her as time goes by and she sings more and more. Good work man.

Thanks Lt. Bob. Iwas half expecting a right royal slagging, as we say in these parts, but this is great.

I don't think my guitar playing was up to a more prominent part, (I'm new to it) which is why we've recruited a proper one and I'll stick to the bass for now. Writing the songs is the bit I like best.

Robbie sings best when she's on full throttle - all sorts of good stuff comes out then - and we're learning how to get her there.

Just as a bit of fun I've put a third one up, which is a straight, almost live (bass overdubbed) one taker blues romp, written in about ten minutes. To my (sort of) disappointment, it's the one all our mates like best. If nothing else the lyric should make you smile.

Listened to Loving on the Edge.

Good performances. I liked the song.

I'd say the guitar needs to be "thicker." I liked the guitar part itself however. The vocals get covered up a bit in spots. The crash cymbal gets a bit too strident. If that bass part cut through better it would make for a very cool song. Maybe an EQ boost around 600-800? Just a thought.

The singer has a good voice, but over-does the "grittiness" thing a bit. Harmonies? Oh my this song calls out for them. By the way, I'm the self proclaimed "harmony nazi" around here.

I listened to Loving On the Edge, Garry.

I'll comment on the recordings here but if you'd like, I wouldn't mind if you started a thread over in songwriting to discuss these ditties there.

First, the guitar intro is nicely done. Played well and recorded clean. Don't give me that British modesty. The flange/Phase had me expecting a more energetic drum track, though. Was this sequenced? The drums feel stilted to me. Thin and held back. We need an additional crash sample, if they were sequenced.

I also would recommend a thicker guitar sound. Are you running through an effects processor? Perhaps mic'ing a cab would give you a fatter tone.

The vocal performance is strong but the whole song seems kind of slow and it keeps her dragging notes. Speed this up 15 BPM and she'll be kicking in high gear, super petrol! (Does that make sense over there?)

You make it sound like this is more of a hobby to give your girlfriend a platform for performing but your songs are too good not to do them justice.

Hope you don't think I'm coming down too hard. I just want you to produce the best thing possible. all for the good of the music.

I'll drop by tomorrow to clarify the many confusions I've no doubt created here.

Something says "Loving on the Edge" is influenced by a mix of Foreigner, Queen, and the like... nice, driving feel... with that bassline...

She's certainly got a nice tone... no nasal, froggy thing at all... production wise, this doesn't sound bad either... all be it on multimedia speakers.

Thanks guys. For you all to take the effort to listen to and comment on this stuff is fantastic. It's much more helpful to have comments fom people who don't know me but do know about music than just asking our mates what they think.

I should explain ( and this is difficult in the light of the title of this board) that although I have a home recording set up, neither it nor I are really up to doing this sort of thing properly, and therefore Robbie and I took ourselves round to somebody who has a more advanced home studio which he runs commercially. I was very involved in it but his was the technical input. I learnt a huge amount - especially about how things sound different in a studio, where the guitar (which by the way was done thru' a Pod) sounded thick and rich!

Therefore everything was done in a bit of a rush - for example I did the bass line for the Edge not having picked a bass up for about twenty years, in three takes, which in retrospect was pretty stupid. (I've subsequently bought a bass!) Robbie only got four takes on each of the three songs we did.

Anyway, we're loving this journey and you are definitely making it better!

Yes Bob, I'm sure you spotted the Sabbath influence in my songwriting! Working on some new songs but it will be a while, especially as we are now trying to get a decent sound and put a set together we can gig with.

Speaking of songwriting, stonepiano I'd love to debate it in that forum but it seems a bit egocentric to start a thread. Watchathink?
