Hey

I have a SE2200a running into a Line 6 Toneport UX2.

I've got Phantom power on, plugged in, checked connections.

The noise I'm getting, is like there's a delay/echo on the sound. And also sometimes the signal gets louder, hard to explain.

Anyone know what this could be?

Edit:

I just did the bass rolloff switch to on, and the noise is gone. Does that mean there's low frequencys in my rooms causing the noise?

You sure its not just feedback?

Are you using the input monitoring on the Line6? Monitors? Headphones?

I'm using a headphone feed, so no monitors.

I'm not that clued up on everything to be honest. I'll try turning gain down etc, see if it helps.

Could it be that you're using both hardware and software input monitoring at the same time, and hearing the combination of the zero-latency monitoring of the Line6 (assuming it has this) and the software input monitoring from your DAW (which will have some level of latency, varying depending on your buffer settings).

Yeah, I suppose it could be.
I can't at the moment, but I'll record some stuff later, and see if it does the same effect in playback.

Is this the sound you're talking about?

(in case anyone is worried about damaging their monitors, I filtered out anything below 40hz and anything above 18khz before amplifying it)

There's a regular amplitude modulation of around 20hz. Do you have any nearby fans? Overhead AC units? How close are you to your computer?

Or it could be a ground loop issue. Do you have a laptops plugged in with a power supply? Any other equipment with external power supplies?

Any flourescent lights? Dimmer switches / units?

There's looooadds of things it could be. Hopefully someone might come along that recognises that kind of noise.

The thing is, the noise was inaudible with my monitors at the max volume I normally run them... heck, the amps produce more noise than there was in the file! I had to apply 62db of gain to the file to get it up to that level.

If you had a recording with the preamp gain set as it was for that sample which averaged around -18dbfs, I would say that's an acceptable amount of noise to have. If you cranked the preamp gain fully for that sample then think about the level of the noise floor in a real-life situation when you're probably using a lot less gain.

Ah, exactly what I have.

I think it could be my PC. More optomised for gaming than audio

I'll do a few fixes, see if it helps. And yeah, it did seem louder in my 'phones :p

Thanks for helping a noob out man :)
