weird levels? (tascam 388)

as some of you might know, I'm new on tascam 388 I got and I was recording today and I got a bit confused - I recorded a track which peaked at around 0db, but when I played it back - the channels I recorded to was pushing the meter above 0db, alot... does it have to do with the tape I'm using? And, I've heard that you can calibrate the 388's levels - so I'm starting to wonder if the previous owner has done something like that?

help a confused 388 newbie ;)

First, what tape are you using?

457 is recommended, and 456 should give you the same levels & response.

When the 388 in enabled to record onto tracks, the reference of the level going to the track would be VU meters 1-8, the PGM/Tape levels, themselves.

The Stereo L/R buss and levels would be independent of PGM levels on the busses. The Stereo L/R buss gets it's levels from the "Main" section and also the "Monitor" section.

Make sure the dbx is on during recording and playback. ;)
