hi guys. I have an old Fostex X-18 recorder, it's a 4 track cassette machine.

The machine when I put the power on, it rewinds, play and everything, but there is no sound.
The strange thing is that it starts playing sound when I push the power cable against the machine, in a way that it makes a 180 degrees angle with the power plug that goes into the machine. If I press it below the machine it will keep working, but if you move the machine it will stop laying / recording, although it will keep rolling.

Looks like a bad contact, but it is strange since I thought it will work or not, not such a strange behaviour.

Any help with this?

cheers, andrés

hum..............................

i would say that in could be a power short or a bad connection.
call fostex toll free at 1800-9fostex or go to there website.
(fostex.com)

if you filled out the warrity mabye you could get it fixed??????

how long have you had the thing?

if you've had it a long, long time it would be a good idea to buy another recorder like the digital fostex vf-16 16-track recorder(that's the one that i have and it's great)

or if you won't to stick with good old 4-track tape you could
just get another one of them???????

maybe it's short. It's like an X-12, but old.

This is an old thing, aI think the guarantee was out the day they sold it to me here, and that was 10 years ago.

Now I am using a computer so I won't be buying a new one, but I want it to work properly.

It can't be a short in the power socket or it wouldn't work at all so it must be something adjacent to the power socket so that when you put tension on that socket, it pushes against whatever it is. If your a semi competent guy, you can open it up and look. I'd look for either a component that's right up against the power socket OR they might have that socket mounted on a circuit board so when you push on the socket you flex that board which might make a cold or fractured solder joint make contact.
