So I'm getting ready to say good-bye to my current website hosting provider, and I already have a few possible new ones I'm considering, but just wanted to hear any suggestions people might have.

Looking for inexpensive monthly fees with unlimited storage and transfer bandwidth...etc...etc....etc....preferably sites that provide for and understand the requirements for music/audio sites...streaming, larger files....etc...etc...etc.

How are you building your site?

Do you just need a place to host your media while you cross-link from a wordpress?
Are you building a full, custom site? If so, will it be mostly flat HTML, or will it be pretty feature-rich?
Do you already have the site designed and built (or someone to do so), or will you need someone to do that for you?

I have experience with hostgator. I think prices are good and no problems with reliability. I'm not crazy about their control panel, ftp access, but don't use it enough to be an inconvenience.

No problem with VHS asking some questions to help you decide your approach with hopes you might notice his sig. :D

I'm just looking to move my existing site to a different hosting provider...that's it.
I have everything else covered, but thanks.

i've been using iPage for a couple of years with no complaints. when i emailed them for a support issue (no major thing), they got back to me asap with a response.

i host music on my site thru Soundcloud, but i previously used a standalone mp3 flash player and it worked great.

i pay around $100/year, but they often have good deals on the first year for new customers.

Ha ha! We don't actually offer unlimited hosting, so I was already chalking this one up as no sale! :D Since it's my day job though, I should ostensibly be an expert though, right? Might as well try to be helpful regardless.

Hostmonk can direct you to some pretty good deals on VPS, which can be a good set up if you want more control over your hosting environment. (i.e. it's a virtual linux server, so you can install whatever software you need.)

I recommend against GoDaddy's hosting as they tend to be mediocre at best and pretty shady at worst.

It's worth noting that anybody who offers you "unlimited" storage/bandwidth/whatever is probably lying. They'll have far more storage and bandwidth than you'll probably need, but you'll be sharing it with hundreds or thousands of other users. If one of them gets a sudden spike in traffic, it could hurt everyone's sites.

Yeah...that's just a limitation of the "pipe"....but some hosting providers have limits, so you can only store and transfer so much per day/month. I found a couple that said "unlimited", but then in the details that say it doesn't mean absolutely unlimited though they do cover about 99.5% of their user's needs, and it's only when dealing with multimedia files.......and that's when I stopped reading and decided they would not be good for me. :D

I found a three that look pretty good, way inexpensive, and they do all the streaming media stuff.... justhost, hostmonster, and bluehost.

ipage and fatcow (it's pretty much the same company)....look really good, but they are the ones who say this in their details about "unlimited":
How much disk space and bandwidth will my plan include?
There are no set limits on the disk space or data transfer (bandwidth) that we provide in our hosting plans. We want you to have the resources you need to build a great online presence, and 99.95% of all customers will have more than enough disk space and bandwidth to meet their needs.

That being said, we do require all customers to be fully compliant with our Terms of Service and utilize disk space and bandwidth in the normal operation of a personal or small business website. While it is rare, we may need to put constraints on accounts that are using resources beyond what would be expected in the normal operation of a personal or small business website.

Again, the most common situations involve customers who use their accounts for storage of files—particularly multimedia files—that are not linked off of their websites. It is very rare for a customer who is managing a personal or small business website to exceed normal usage.

I'm sure you can still move a lot of files with them and not exceed their "limits"....but with that disclaimer, they can put a lid on media storage & transfers if you do too much.

I often put media on my current website simply to allow someone else to download it....but I don't necessarily put *links* to it on my website....and that's what they are saying, if you are moving data but not linking to it directly off your webpages..it can be viewed as a file-sharing.

Anyway....I'm going to go with one of the other three I mentioned.

@Miroslav, I don't know if there are personal hosts that do this, but when you get to business-level hosts, they tend to be a lot better about having set, consistent limits for storage and bandwidth.

e.g. If you get a VPS, and it says that you have 40 GB of storage and 1000 bps bandwidth, you can be pretty confident that's what you'll get (and will have contractual recourse available if not). I generally trust that kind of thing more than I do "unlimited" accounts.

Of course, I tend to work for web-design companies, so I have access to their business-level hosting. :D

Yeah Bluehost.com is awesome. I've been using it for a while now, and I've helped set several other people with it. You can easily integrate wordpress or plenty of other content management systems.

is there a particular reason as to why you would want to host you files?
