We need stimulation.

Hello? Does anyone visit this room anymore? We need someone to strike up a little discussion in here. Okay, I'll give it a try.

When I was shopping around for recording software, I tried out at least half a dozen demos. I finally settled on CEP/AA because of its context-sensitive menus. (Which means you can right click almost anywhere in the program and get a little pull-down menu.) I discovered that I could accomplish almost everything I wanted in the program without even cracking open the manual. That alone sold me. Figuring out how to use some of the other programs was a long, slow, frustrating task.

My hat's off to Serillium or whatever the hell their name was. I've been upgrading ever since. :D :p :)

Hi RW!!!....yes, there are people who still frequent this area, after the cave.
SYNTRILLIUM!!....OK, that's sorted!
Cool Edit, ever since it's innitial release as an 'editor 'based system, back in <>'96, has often been thought of as the most intuitive, easy to understand O/S for the recording/editing enthusiast, or pro Radio Broadcaster alike.
I've been using CE since about 96-97, and I've been upgrading since then.
But i just had to stop at CEP 2.1...it trully is the best of the bunch, for me anyway.
AA seemed to dump some of the functions I really grew to love, so I dumped them. Also, I wasn't impressed with the resources it was using, compared to CEP, or it's variants.....others just love the Adobe editions!!!..great!!
Well done on your choice, and sorry for 'waffling' on!! (is that a word?)

PS...I recently hooked up a "red-Rover".....man, that thing is fuckin' ace!!

While I switched over to Reaper (mainly for MIDI/VSTi support), I would still gladly use AA (1.5). 2.0 didn't go over too well with me.

AA is a very easy to use program with lots of features, and its built-in effects/plugi-ns are great too. If only they had direct 24-bit recording support, and MIDI/VSTi I probably never would have switched.

Midi?....Yep...good point that appears to 'put some off'.?
24bit?.....32bit gives the same result.?
Have you used Wrappers in Cool Edit?

Yeah MIDI is an important part of my recording process now.

My CPU isn't fast enough for 32-bit. I tried it and my computer just couldn't keep up when I had 6 or more tracks.

Never found any good, free VSTi wrappers. If you know of one, let me know, because I still use AA 1.5 from time to time. :)

I have AA 2.0 and it cannot record in 24bit. My hardware won't go to 32 bit so, I am left with 16 bit recording depth. It still sounds good though.

It can edit and play MIDI files but it cannot record MIDI data from an outside device.

It does support both DirectX and VST plugins but I don't know about VSTi. Is there a difference between VST and VSTi?

BUT...BUT...BUT.....you're hardware doesn't need to be 32 bit, (it can't be anyway, as you prolly know anyway :rolleyes: ).....But I guess if you're machine struggles, that would be a bit of a hassle?

I thought the Software had to match the Hardware just like with sample rate. No my machine is plenty fast. It should be able to handle it. I just never tried it before because I thought I couldn't.
 
You're right that if your converters are only 24 bit, then you're not truly recording in 32-bit, the software is just padding the audio with extra 0s for math (plugins, etc.) At least that's what I remember hearing.

And the difference between VSTs and VSTi is the i stands for instrument (Virtual Instruments like synths, drum machines, etc.). VSTs are usuallly just effects.

'padding'?....mmmm.......basically!!
So, by all means, if you have the 'warp-5' factor activated on your PC, go with 32bit, everytime within CEP, rather than 16.
You should be happier with the results, even though it all goes to 16bit in the end anyway.

I'll have to try that 32 bit recording. No time tonight but, soon.

Will it double my file size?
 
I want more lore.

I want to know how many of the Syntrillium crew migrated over to Adobe as part of the buy-out, and I want to know how many of them still work for the big A and how they feel about it.
 
Dobro, I know you have stuck with an earlier version of CEP, but I have converted to Audition 2.0. It supports ASIO and has other features that make it better for me. Downside: the mixdown facility always adds another stereo track to your session. Upside: if you don't like the mix, it is easily deleted.

FWIW, I started with Cool Edit Pro 1.2....
 
I have and use CEP 2.0
I don't plan on upgrading, since I really feel comfortable with it :D , no complaints!
I started using it without even checking the manual, and everything was so intuitive (as said before).
I'm really happy with CEP.
I'm still learning new things to get the best out of this great program.

I'd like this info too!!!..I too am most interested in how the company 'dis-banded'.
