So what's the deal here? Any ideas? I just get an error message saying the audio format is not recognized by Wavelab. The file can not be opened. I'm trying to open a WAV file. The program is called: WAVElab. What files is it supposed to open, for shit's sake???

Dr. V

It opens .wav files.
When you installed it, did you tic all the boxes when asked which formats it would support.
I have a few Wavelabs and they pretty well run the whole gauntlet.
Also: What is the source of your files. Not a proprietary .wav format, is it?

Hmmm... Tick the boxes...? I don't know, I'll go and check. What am I looking for, to change?

I've discovered it will open .mp3

What do you mean by 'proprietry' wavs? They were recorded by me, using another program and use the normal .wav extension.

Thanks

Dr. V

I don't want to swoop in like Captain Obvious, but don't you think that contacting Steinberg would be the (really obvious) first choice here...?

Is the file a strange bit or sample rate?

Wave lab would probably be fine with 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz, @ 16 bit or 24 bit.

Are you trying to open a wave file recorded at 48 kHz into a 44.1 kHz project or 44.1 kHz into a 48 kHz project?

Stereo file to where there should be a mono file only.

Alan.

Salutes Cpn. Obvious... :laughings:

Yeah, I suppose I can try. Anyone got a Oui'ja board handy? Oh THAT Steinberg... Yes, I'll try them. Thanks. :)

Far as I know, 144.1 KHz, 24bit - and as to the second one, I don't know. I'll check it. Thanks.

Just checked up and I can't change it, as that section's all greyed out. Seems to be stuck at 16bit. I recorded everything in 32bit float and there isn't even an option for that. Obviously Wavelab is useless. I'll chuck it in the bin.

Which version of WL do you have?
I was hoping you'd tell me that.
WitzEndoz is on the right track, I think.

Well that's why I was asking which version you had.
During the installation process in one of mine (5, I think) it asks which files you want to associate with Wavelab. You can skip by that without realizing.

What do you mean by 'proprietry' wavs?
Roland eg. has their own Wave format that won't interact with any of the DAWs. There may be others. "Proprietary" simply means that they own it.

144.1 KHz? That's a typo, I know but double check it anyway. :)

*spits up in mouth*

Dude, you are using WL *Lite*, which is probably six to eight years old, and was a basically a freebie bundled with soundcards at the time, little better than a demo. It was a far cry from the full version of the WL of that day, which was probably V3, maybe V4. WL is about to realize V7.

Your problem is likely that WL Lite didn't support 32 bit float files (didn't support CD burning either). I would agree that WL Lite is worthless, but that hardly equates to WL being worthless. I have used WL nearly every day for five years now, and it has made me quite a lot of money.

What exactly did you want to do to your .wav file in the first place?

I created them with FL Studio.

I tried to use Wavelab because it came bundled with my excellent sound card and I had no idea it was (or that there ever could be) anything 'ancient & crippled' available from the renowned Steinberg.

But thanks for letting me know. I just assumed...

I downloaded Audacity when I realised WL wouldn't do what I wanted it to and now I am having problems with that, too...

I ask Audacity, in the preferences, to output and input to E-DSP (ASIO) and it insists on sending the signal straight to my WAVE L/R.

Uhgk! WTF???

Do you want to send one of us a file?
mshilarious would be better than me but I'd give it a go.

Thanks, but I'm not sure what good it would do. I'm trying to get Audacity to output to the ASIO and it keeps going to the Windows WAVE.

Stop it man, seriously, you are going to injure me.

Here's the deal with WL: it is basically a one-man effort, written by the very brilliant Philippe Goutier. He's been working with Steinberg since quite some time ago, but in the last ten years Steinberg makes absolutely terrible corporation decisions as a regular business practice. Seems like the Lite version was probably one of those . . . or it's just a vestige of a much earlier era in DAW-ville.

If you log in to the Cubase forum, you will find there is a WL forum where Mr. Goutier often answers questions directly. But I'm afraid I searched that board already, and there is hardly anything on Lite, and nothing in the Steinberg knowledge base.
