water damage?

Hey everyone,

I've been gone from my basement apartment for a few weeks and just returned to see my room has some sort of leak on floor level...half of my carpet is soaked (probably no more than a half an inch of rainwater came in)...I'm assuming it's from rainwater that seeped through from the few times it rained while I was gone. I have a bunch of equipment and electronics (computer, keyboard, speakers, guitars, effects pedals, mics, etc.) in the room. All of the stuff is elevated at least a few feet off of the ground and out of reach of the water....most of it is in boxes, but some of it isn't (computer, piano). Should I be at all worried? The other few times it happened I wasn't away for weeks so I was able to soak up the water right away, but this time I'm more worried since some of this water has probably been here for over a week....I started running my dehumidifier immediately..let me know what you guys think.

Ok, the most important thing (as obvious as it seems) is that you don't plug anything in or turn anything on; Even battery powered stuff.

If you suspect that something got wet, like the computer, do what you're doing. De-humdifier is the way forward.
Don't be tempted to check it out until you're 100% sure it's bone dry.

Often electronics can be soaked and dried without any repercussions, as long as they were not powered on until they completely dried out, so that's the key thing.

For stuff like guitars/pianos/things made of wood, the damage is either done or it isn't, I guess. I hope you got away with it.

If the stuff is all elevated and you think the water level didn't reach it, then there probably isn't a problem, but drying the place out would still be good practice.

Thanks man. I stupidly turned on the computer for a few minutes before realizing what you are saying here (though it seemed to be working fine). I think I'll be fine as all of the equipment was elevated and mostly in boxes.

speaking of water in the basement....this is what happenned to my basement last summer..where i keep ALL of my equiptment, ranging from my comutor, mixing board/s, fog machines, cordless mics, corded mics, light trees, amp/s, guitar, guitar cab etc etc etc..
we had a SEVERE storm comming through about midnight....I fell asleep, woke up literally less then about an hour later, and found the water in my basement to be a SOLID 4 inches deep..
i took these pics the next day, after running a small 12volt pump for about 8 hours straight..(our power went out, so our sump pump was`nt working)..anyway, it took days just to get the standing water comepletly out, and literaly a couple weeks to get the carpet where it even "felt" half ass dry...I ran a big/nice dehumidifier non stop for probley a month, and did`nt turn anything on for weeks..but it all survived except my cordless mics, which happen to be on the flloor, comepletly submerged in water..(batteries still in the mics)..I mean, i did lose alot of stuff, but as far as my DJ equiptment, and recording stuff, it all survived..(except the mics)

I take it the dieting didn't go so well that year? At least you had a good excuse.

Seriously though, sorry to hear that man. I can't even imagine.

LOL...no, that was the ole lady`s crap...she gained about 8lbs over the previous winter, and was paniking..LOL

Al - sorry to see that, and Gene - sorry to hear that. There's a reason I don't keep my equipment in my basement. (And I bought a generator to run the sump pump if the power goes out!)

Gene - although your things may have stayed dry, the next thing is MOLD. Get everything out of there and make the landlord pay for mold remediation.
