"Watchin the Detectives"

last winter, when my friend GV was here in salt lake to go riding in the mountains, we did an evening session, where i got him to play a cover tune he likes to do on his solo gig........
this old classic by Elvis Costello.
i didn't really know the song at all, so i made up some parts to go along with it.

GV played an acoustic guide track, then laid down two acoustic rhythm parts, then sang lead vox, and then sang again..
with the intention that, i'd pick one later.
but when i blended them together just for fun, they lined up so well, i decided to mix it that way.

i went back later, and added bass guitar, electric guitar, and backup vocals.

we hope to do another one this season, hopefully one of GV's originals...

crank it up, it's pretty mellow on the mix..

here's a link to 'yousendit' if you want to download a 320kbps mp3, which sounds way better than the streaming..

Cool..............A got a sort of country twist to it.

It seems a bit muddy around 200hz. (It could be just me as I am home sick with the flu)

My favorite Elvis tune. This is a great version. I don't know anything about recording acoustic guitar, so I have no comment on that other than it sounds good to me (maybe a little too compressed???). But your voice sounds great and I love this arrangement and performance, man.

thanks for listening..

yeah, it's easy to fall into a country vibe, with that kind of chord structure and meter......
muddy at 200hz, i'll check that....
thanks.

Rami-
thanks for listening.
the lead vocals are by my friend GV, i do the backups..
the acoustics, too compressed, eh?
i was using some distance on the mics, and might have run the compressors a bit hot to get some makeup gain and room sound...

Yeah, really good performance. I like the vocal sound but agree about too much compression on the gtrs.

Interesting version. I liked all the parts, although the 'Shoot...shoot..' part seemed a little t00 different. Nice vocals, & bvs. Good performances all round

Really cool take on this...really like the vocals...definetly a Elvis Costello vibe...Your arrangment really swings and thats cool!!Haven't heard this in a long time ...forgot how cool his music was!
You guys did a great job on your version!!!!!

thanks for listening, and bolstering the compression idea...

bulls hit
now i gotta go find a copy of the original, and listen, and see what the backgrounds are doing!
LOL
honestly, i have no idea how the original is supposed to go...
i'll probably laugh at what i came up with.....

elvis DID write some cool shit, didn't he?!
i saw him on austin city limits, not too long ago, and it blew me away, the depth of all his material.
plus, he was playing some really raunchy, down and dirty guitar, with a very purist method, and i really dug that!

thanks for checking it out...

I don't know the song, but what I just heard sounded very good. Great playing. Good job. :)

Sounds good Mr Gonzo. I'm always impressed by the quality of your mixes.... Real pro sound to this.... The playing and singing is top notch too......

:) :D :) :D

appreciate the comments!

hey, thanks for the kind words!
i didn't really know the song either....
but it's pretty straightforward, the rhythm guitar (which the guy that sang it, played) pretty much rules what has to happen, so it was easy to follow his lead, so to speak...
thanks for listening

well, i don't know about how 'pro' my shitty mixes really sound, but i appreciate the vote of confidence!!
GV's singing is prime here... i just do the little backups, and i tried to blend them back a good bit, as to not do anything but reinforce the main vocal.

Second link didn't work for me... anyway... the clarity between each instrument and vocal part is very nice. Sounds pro to me, nice... I really enjoyed this ;)

Gonzo,

Without getting into the mixing aspect, I really enjoyed that a whole lot! Excellent!
