The fact that they totally sucked has nothing to do with it... man, that has been the worst chain record store for a decade or more...

ya thats true thier selection was weak, but records stores are really struggling man alll of them are turing into little radio shacks selling tv's vcr's video games and shyt it ain even a record store anymore. I read a few months back another chain was going under I know thier owned by bayside distribution. Everybody is feeling the effects. I mean check it, Im a normal buyer ok.......
I like music but dont love it, just a fan, I download all the songs I like for free and my craving for music goes away so why would I buy more cd's with only one song that i've been programmed to like I mean that I choose to like. Thats talking from a regular person. Not to mention most of the music not so sound today it all sounds the same to many carbon copies
to be honest Im a music fiend but most people are not.

The music stores are hurting because the music out today sucks, and the economy sucks. It has nothing to do with downloads

As far as the musicians are concerned, the ones that are not getting paid for the free downloads, I would think fellow musicians would not be so quick to download a freebe. I'm not trying to stand on a soapbox here....but damn, what if it was your music everyone was downloading? It's only a few cents...right?

Here's the problem, most cd's only have 1-2 songs that we really like, so if they can download those tunes for free, no motivation to go buy anthing. It IS hurting sales BIG time!

The solution, sell a cd with 2-3 good songs on it, for around $4.95, I'm sure we all would buy it. :)

The music industry (at every level) is in the worst shape I've seem it all the years (many years) I've been in the business. Certainly the hard economy has not helped. Music stores record stores, recording studios, venues are all going out of business at an alarming rate (along with other buinesses both large and small).

There hasn't been a significant music movement in years. Record companies support only a few main acts (some very significant artists have been dropped from thier labels in recent years due to "low sales"). Since the labels spend so much on the videos for the "main acts" there is no money left to support tours for any other acts.

Artists (in particular new artists) have to sign terrible deals - since there are few options. Downloading and pirating of music hurts labels and artists.

Even on local levels there are fewer live music venues then there "used to be". I know from my experiance (as a very "established musician (a sideman) in my area - my gigs have dropped by a significant amount - in part cause I'm getting older, but mostly cause there ain't no gigs left.

I often feel sorry for young musicains trying to earn a living (or even just gaining exposure). I'm glad that I'm getting too old to be effected that much any more.

It is too complex to point blame on any one thing - but certainly when videos became more important than records (which in trun led to the pretty boy bands and the whole teen pop image is everything phase) and when computers and video games became a larger passtime than learning to play an instrument - well I'm sure you can see where I'm going with this.

It's funny

It's funny that we are all on here trying to get the best possible sound but then we resort to downloading music that's compressed mp3's.

I try not to download. But CD's are 20 bucks each and you only get 2 good songs. They should start selling singles again.

The record industry is down in my opinion because, when cds came out every body was buying CDs to replace the vinyl records they had. Now things are settling and people are buying new music only.

They should make CDs less expensive with better songs.

If the labels get burned good for them, they've been f**king us for years anyway.

I was signed and had to sell 40,000 cds before making 3 grand. As an indie we can make 3 grand selling 250 cds!!

I'm sure downloads don't help their cause but the music is surely the biggest problem. I remember buying Cds with 8 songs but they all rocked. Now you get 15 or 18 songs on a cd and 2 are good.

It'll be interesting to see what happens.

Places like Best Buy are killing those places like Warehouse Music.. Why would I go pay $17-$20 dollars for a CD at Warehouse when I could go to Best Buy and get it for $12-$13?

Plus the music today sucks and the people that have money to buy this stuff aren't sepending it on the junk they put out today.. Kids don't buy CD's...

I think downloading music has little to nothing to do with their problems.. They have put themselves out of business..

Unfortunately, it's the musician that always ends up getting screwed in the long run.
