Wanted: Opinions on Shure KSM27

I guess im guilty of not using the search function when i was newbie, and who knows maybe even when not newbie. Its understandable and maybe it shouldnt be blamed on them. But it really is irritating still.

I just ignore threads that have anything closely related to an already heavy discussed topic. I want to be involved and help people but i hate saying the same things every day.

The times i do read them to see if i can contribute, im surprised to see the same people replying the exact same thing every day. I dont get it.

Anyway.

rboyce - did you find the information you were looking for in the search function? or do you need any more specific advice on the KSM27? Let us know, this is your thread man. Sorry to hi jack it and have you feel left out.

Danny, you've made a very good observation.

Yes, most forums have a search function and ignoring threads as opposed to making fun of newbies is a better way of dealing with the frustration. Not to mention better for your reputation as well as your health. (you never know when you may meet someone face to face.)

I would argue, though, (maybe argue is a bad choice of words since I don't ever mean to start an argument) that most people are generally still technophobes. It's a huge miscalculation to assume people know how all things work. They want the simplest means of finding their information, and just as the search function is still a query, humans as social beings prefer the interaction of a direct question as opposed to sifting through stacks of information to find what they immediately need.

Yes, its a total pain in the butt to have to type an answer every time. I prefer the answers where when someone is familiar with a thread that deals with the issue, they paste the link in their response. This is the most diplomatic way of directing the person without being condescending. That is a familiar plague here. I get the feeling that some of the more "educated" users feel as though they were born knowing the information and everyone else should just "get it"!!

It's not just that, it's that if you ask about a mic, you only get the experience of the members that are here on that day. If you search, you get the accumulated experience of years worth of threads. You can also see how opinions have evolved over time as new mics become available.

Maybe that's another reason to "advertise" the search function when you first come to the page.
 
Since I do everything backwards, I bought a KSM27 and THEN decided to see what other people thought of it. I found this thread using the search function, and it appears I've learned more about how people feel about redundant questions than Shure microphones. I guess I should search further back. . .

Good one. I also agree wholeheartedly with the person that said just ignore what you're not in the mood to talk about at that moment. It's a nicer thing to do. I'm a newb here, but go to some other sites on different topics, like race tuning RD350's or restoring vintage Jeeps and I'm an old-timer guru like some of you guys and if I'm busy I'll ignore, if not then I help out. But I don't diss anybody for asking a question. A more obvious search section would probably be nice, but if you find it and use it once you'll know where it is. Many other sites use this same format so it's not totally oddball over here either.
Trading info is what we're here for I believe.

I read about 20 pages that the search gave me. Stealthtech made a post back in Jan '02 and never got a response. I never did find what I was lookin' for. I got a bunch of info from the Shure site, and I'm still trying to finish that long thread on recording (I don't remember the name offhand, but it's the BIG one).

btw, I used to have a '72 RD350. Fast! I bored it, ported it, jetted the carbs, and put Bassani chambers on it. Front tire in the air for three gears, touch down and air again in fourth.
 
What is it you want to know? I have two of them, it's my usual vocal mic, except on my own voice where I prefer dynamics. I use it live sometimes too, for soloists or choirs. It's a flexible, dependable performer.

I've never liked it on instruments better than an SDC. I particularly dislike it on acoustic guitar, although you'll find plenty of people who do like it for that.
 
I was basically looking for comparison type opinions. The only other mics I have are $19 radio shack dynamics, and I wanted to upgrade to a decent mic. I don't have enough experience to know which mics are good and which ones aren't. I bought the Shure because it's a name I've seen many times, and it's made in USA.

I just recorded with it for the first time, and I like it. It picks up everything. I have a clip here (apologies for the vocals, I don't claim to be a singer): Talkin' Candy Bar Blues by Peter Yarrow (of Peter, Paul, and Mary).

OK then. The KSM27 is a high quality microphone that will utterly destroy your RS mics. When you read comparisons here, we are comparing it to other quality microphones, and the differences can be very small to the casual listener.

The guitar sounds nice, you can probably get a better tone with some repositioning. What placement did you use?
 
I knew the Shure would smoke my cheapos, but I meant of my upgrade choices did I choose well, or are there better brands for the same $$ or equal quality for less money, that kind of stuff.

As far as placement goes, I put it in it's shock mount on a table stand, on a table about 16" from the 12th fret. I used a Mackie 1202-VLZ PRO mixer, low and high eq turned down 1/4 turn (9 o'clock) mid on 0. The mic has two controls on the back. One is set on "flat" and the other is on "0dB" (-15dB is an option for recording loud sounds like a kick bass - according to the manual).

I think maybe the table needs to go. I imagine that's creating a boundary/proximity type effect, which I think is exaggerating the bass. You might find you don't need the bass cut with a regular stand.

Since you wanted a single mic for guitar and voice, I think you made a good choice. When I say I don't like it on guitar, keep in mind I have 20 mics . . . or so. I need to count them again :o

There should be a saying in pro audio, like the old IBM computer adage: Nobody ever got fired for buying Shure. I think 2/3 of my mics are Shures; they are the backbone of my studio and my live rig.

So you can lose the post-purchase anxiety :)
 
I plan on getting more mics, as money will allow. I think I'll stick with Shure. From what I've read the SM57s and 58s are real popular. I'll get one of each and get more of which ever one suits my needs. Eventually I'd like to record live performances at blues jams. The KSM27 I'll use to record at home, acoustic and amp (I'd really like to capture my Gibson GA-5).

I just got to thinkin' (it happens sometimes :) ), I have two computers on my desk. I'll go with the regular mic stand idea too.

I'm glad someone doesnt treat this unfortunate problem as a crime. When i came into this forum a few months ago, this was honestly the first forum i was involved in. i dont get on forums for hours on end like most real musicians do. and im sure in a while ill get pissed off after the 600th "best mic for under 200 bucks" post, but for now, all i have to say to "Almighty Veterans of The Forum" is... please dont bitch and whine, ignore like danny said. or do something about it, like suggest a larger search button. until then... have fun roaming the forums :)
