Much better all around. Kick sounds deep. Look for more attack though. Maybe put the mic closer to the beater. That kick sounds fat on it's own, but kicks like that can get lost in mixes pretty easy. I also think you could go even tighter on the snare. It's not bad, but still a little dark. I think it can get crisper. Definitely huge improvements though.

Sweet! Dude, it was so weird, I started bringing the toms lower and it kind of started to just fall into place. I de-tuned the kick and it was like "Oh, so that's what Greg meant!" You're totally right about the snare, but even I noticed a slight improvement after tightening it up a bit, so I guess it'll just be a little more of the same. Will experiment with the kick mic - have a new skin on the way as I tore the old head (tripped on a mic stand )

Thanks so much for your help man, and Dinty Moore too, this is something I never ever thought I'd be able to do. You can be totally honest with me here, but do you think this is approaching recordable quality yet? I know I've a some fine tuning to do and maybe some partial treatment but I've a good feeling about this!

Lol, yeah, I recorded with way worse sounding drums than that. At leat my old Rogers snare was way worse. You could definitely record with what you haves. Just get more attack from that kick. The toms sound pretty decent. The snare is totally subjective. Leave it as is and see how it works, or go tighter.

The type of beater on your kick drum makes a big difference too. I have solid wood ones, hard plastic,hard felt and one huge lambswool one. I carry a few in my cymbal bag because my gigs vary a lot.

I love the sound of your drums mate. Except the kick. But I have to be careful not to read my biases into anything. I like a low hard "BOOF !" that feels like a kick in the rock'n'rolls.......
But that aside, I think they sound grand and you can easilly record with what you've got. The drums on much music I listen to, in terms of pure sound, aren't necessarilly better.

I personally like a very snarey sound, but to my ears, you need to tighten the snare wires up a little bit (not too much) but I'm hearing way too much sustain on your snare wires.

I had a vintage-ish Rogers kit from the late 70's. The kick and toms were great, the snare sucked. I bought it for 200 bucks from some redneck outside of Houston because he had no idea what he had on his hands. I was coming off a very long drumming hiatus (like 12 years), I had no band, and I had no idea home recording was even possible, so I didn't care too much about what they sounded like. I just wanted to drum again.

No. I think what you're happy with is paramount. I like so many different drum sounds. I confess to being particularly partial to a kick that just thuds so hard, but that's just me and ultimately, if I like the song, the fact that a particular element isn't to my total liking can in no way diminish my enjoyment of said song.
