i accidentally posted this in the wrong forum... but i think this is the right place for it... i'm new around here. recording is something i never took too seriously, it was just something to let me listen to myself as a musician.

anyway i just did my first cd for a record label... the band is called the coloured lights... you can download for free at www.twelvestepstospace.com

i dont know anything about pro techniques, i just sort of figured things out on my own

the cd was done in cooledit pro with a usb 32-bit interface and some standard cheap-level(100-500) mics

i would love to get some suggestions from people who take recording more seriously about ways i could improve the sound (like what exactly is mastering and how do i experiment with it to get a better sound then what i've already got?)

cheers guys

Too Large

Hey There...
I'll listen to just about anything, but I don't think that many folks will want to download 84+ Mb in one lump...

perhaps 1 track at a time?

Listening to Post Chronological Blues. Good atmosphere created by the delay. Pretty good sounding dynamics when the heavier part comes in. I like the tones of everything but the snare. It sounds like a cheap snare to me but I'm not sure exactly for what reason. Dryer than the rest of the mix? High pitched?

Cool music and I think you did a good job on it. Friends with the band? With the label? How'd you get the gig? Nice stuff.

Thanks

Thanks for the comments... do you think the snare is a little too tinny? I think I agree, it needs more meat on it... might be the cheapness of the snare itself... recorded with two sm57s top/bottom so i think the recording was ok.

I did some work for a friend of one of the band members etc etc through some referrals got the chance to do it. I know it's a big file but if you want to download the whole album I am really looking for some criticism here from the recording community, but I guess I understand since the file's so big.

Cheers,
Jay.

that's a good point. haha thanks.

www.myspace.com/thecolouredlights if you want to sample a bit (however, the bitrate is lower there).

if you're on facebook you can listen to better quality at facebook.thecolouredlights.com.

The 1st song on myspace.
Sounds nice.
The vocals stick out too much. They arent in tune that well, Id highly suggest using auto tune or a vocal pitch correction plug similar before releasing this.
The snare sounds nasty.

Apart from that nice one.

but i agree the snare sounds like crap.
