Someone asked what a compressor sounded like when it "breaths"... listen here, you cant miss it...
it starts unprocessed, then moves to 4:1, then to 12:1 then to mega full blast, where it really breathes bad...
Breathing and pumping Fairchild plug

I always kinda go with the "old school" thought in that sucessful use of the compressor is sonically invisable. In other words, if you hear it, it is not adjusted correctly. Punchy bass gtrs need not sound like they went thru a compressor nor smooth, level vocals.

boy...the noise sure "rode up" in that example, didn't it?

Sure did.
I pretty much like things best without or with just a little compression, and I like it for the most part to be transparent. On the other hand, I'm a serious fan of the Focusrite Red compressor that I used before, and it has some Neve-ish color and sounds pretty thick, and I totally loved it for everything. If its a seriously tasty color, I say yeah, otherwise, I dont wanna know its there. :)
Peace.

That take would make a cool drum intro to a song though.
