"walking on a mine" master

You have a great sound going on, especially the vocal. I was really digging the intro up until the drums came in. The hi hat pattern (and later the ride cymbal) feels to busy to me to the point of distraction. Really the only detractor I heard.
Just my humble opinion.

I'm agreeing with Track here... that little "hoppy-skippy" high hat and ride beat is distracting and too busy. Just a straight simple beat would be perfect.

Reading your posts I can totally hear what youre saying. Unfortunately that hat's a bleed through from the snare mic and I cant mute it, as I already muted the overhead. So I think I'm kind of stuck with it :)

Anything else on eq'ing or levels? I think maybe the kick is too low? Not enough bottom end....

thanx for listening! S/R

I think the hh playing is ok, but is just waaay too loud, and sibilant...along with the vocals a little bit too. Your drum toms sound great....I like that kinda power sound, spread out wide.

A very full production, with nice synth pads....all nice. A little vocal "frog" at 4:08? only noticeable because your 'out on your own' where the music drops off..

nice flange effect too..

very styx-ish sounding...in a good way.

There's certainly a lot going on here. I like the vocal sound and the way the instrumentation builds throughout up to the "quiet" bridge. My problem with the drums is the performance during the chorus sections; I wouldn't track the vocal rhythm that way, rather, I'd set it off.

I thought the bottom end was good as is. In fact -- and although it's hard to tell from the speakers I heard it through -- I thought that perhaps there was a little too much low-mids at times, ie a little muddy, at the points where everything was going on at once.

Lyrically, I thought that some of the verses were awkward, in that it's a smooth melodic type of piece but the words are not in the meter established by the song. Also, I like the central metaphor, but isn't it walking through the mines (as in tip toeing through a minefield)?

I very much like this song. I gotta agree about the vocal rhythm. A bit forced. I'm no pro singer, but it sounds kinda awkward. Not the performance or sound quality or even the notes. Those are fine IMHO. The lines just don't flow the way I think you're feeling them. Just for fun maybe mute the vox track and play around with some different syncopation. You may find another level of expression there somewhere. Just a thought.

Great song though. Keep at it!

Excellent song, man. I'll probably be listening to it after this thread dies out :)

Nothing to say that hasn't already been said - I do agree that the hihat is throwing off the groove a bit, and that the hihat needs a bit of mix/fix work done. Even if it's bleeding a little bit into the snare mic, if you tried to re-do (ugh) the hihat and/or ride, wouldn't it blend in?

Love the pads - and I kinda like the little vocal frog at 4:08 - it adds a little bit of grit :)

Keep up the good work!

That's a cool tune, gotta agree with the hi-hat , ride patterns, straight time would have been better, ces't la vie.

Great singing, reminds me of jon bon jovi a bit. What's with the vocal at 4:09? Is that an mp3 glitch or did your voice crack?

Good job overall though, dig it.

this is some quality stuff. Love the vocal, it does remind me of Bon Jovi. Background vocals blend in well, too. However, I always like to hear extream dynamic in the song itself, so I guess the song didn't progress as aggressive as I would like to hear, but that's just my taste.
Good song/mixing

great tune... great production...

very Styx, with a little Squeeze thrown in?

Flange on the solo was nicely done too.

nice song.. I agree with the other comments. I think if you just kept the high hat and ride cymbals straighter it would help. It does sound a bit like Bon Jovi, but I dont like Bon Jovi. I also heard the voice crack at 4ish..Nice song though..

The input so far is incredible! The main things I'm hearing is:

FIX HI-HAT!!!
VOCAL FROG AT 4:08
HAT & RIDE PATTERN
VOCAL FLOW

theres more but I'll start with these when I fix it. I will lower the vocs slightly, and try to gate that hat from the snare and then use the overhead mic hat sound. I may end up destroying a decent sound on the snare though :) I think with the hat set back, that pattern thing will fit better. To be totally honest here, we won't re-record it because I think we're at the point where this CD has been in the works since Feb. of 2001 and we all have ants in our pants. We will do many fixes but PLEASE no more recording! :) Not till next CD.

I will throw in a quick vocal replacement at 4:08 however, the reason I left it in this far is that it sound more realistic and unpolished to me, but I certainly dont want it to sound like a crack.

Boy, Bon Jovi and Styx, huh? :) Awww I gotta admit it, I grew up listening to that stuff! We all have our roots...

The guys in the band are reading these threads as well, and they will aid in our discussions of what to change and keep.
