Vynil to CD

I know this is probably neophyte stuff for most of you, but I have dozens of pristine vynil Albums I want to get over to CD -- I have a burner in my PC... until of course, my wife learns of this plan.

Plug your turntable into your soundcard input jack, record all your songs, seperate each song for each track (unless you record them one at a time)
Save them in WAV format, burn them to CD.

You can't "just" connect your turntable to your computer. :( (Sorry about that Prism, no disrespect intended).

j8kster, you are going to have to put a mixer between the signal path of the TURNTABLE and your COMPUTER.

If you have the money, you could purchase a simple dj mixer for about $40.00.

If you don't have the money to spare, then you could rent a dj mixer for a day for about $15.00.

And if your financial situation is really tight (right now), then you could buy a dj mixer and then return the mixer to the store (:( sorry about that last suggestion.........but, you've got to keep it real).



So, connect the turntable to the mixer's PHONO 1, then go out of the dj mixer (STEREO(l/r) RCA MALE to STEREO 1/8" MALE) into the LINE IN on your computer (LINE IN not the MIC IN).

Um...yes you can? It must depend on the turntable, because some of them have the unamplified ceramic outputs, and some have amps built in. But theoretically, I know that my turntable could easily connect to my soundcard's input with a simple home made connector consisting of two RCA male plugs and one 1/8" stereo phono jack.

Most turntables require a preamp to provide the RIAA EQ compensation....

I haven't seen a ceramic-based turntable cartridge in years!!!

So in all likelihood, it really isn't as simple as connecting the turntable to the soundcard...

Well, I tried

Thanks for all the advice guys... I went the route of turn table to line in and could just barely hear the music.

The turn Table is a linear drive model from Technics from the early 80s... so maybe I stumbled onto the old ceramic whatever thing...

oh well here goes $40 for that mixer!

You should be able to do this by simply plugging your turntable into your stereo receiver and then running the line outs from your receiver to your soundcard. I assume you already have the receiver - otherwise, how do you use the turntable? There should be line outs on the receiver - normally they're used to feed a tape deck for recording purposes. Essentially you want to do the same thing, except the recording device is your computer through your sound card. Same requirements, though.

The signal directly out of the turntable is not strong enough by itself. Your recever, however, will supply the necessary preamp to boost the signal to line level.

I assume Spinster's suggestion of a DJ mixer would also work, but a receiver will do the same job.

BTW, you will also need some software for this to capture the recording to .wav files. It's possible you got something with your CD burner that will do the trick. I've used Spin Doctor which is part of Adaptec/Roxio's EZ CD Creater Deluxe or Platinum package for this purpose.

You'll also need the cable that Spinster mentioned - dual RCA to 1/8" male stereo.

I forgot about that solution. :D

You must have a receiver or else you wouldn't be able to listen to the records in the first place (my fault, I wasn't thinking).

So, as Dachay2tnr said, hook up your turntable to your receiver. Then, go out of your receiver's TAPE OUT or AUX OUT into your computer LINE IN.

Now you can still hold on to that $40. :D
