What settings are you guys using on the VTB-1?

This thread is about 1.5 years old. However, I still use my VTB-1 regularly. Generally, I set the output gain to '0' (unity) and adjust the input gain (with the meter on 'input') until I'm just hitting the yellow with my peaks and tweak the output gain until I have a decent level in my software. I don't use the tube blend very much, but if I want some, I just start turning it until it sounds good (generally between 9 and 11 o'clock seems to work best for vocals). The Studio Projects site actually has a very good description of how to set the gain staging on the VTB-1 using the on-board meters.

Avalon. ==I wouldnt use one of those damn things ive someone gave it to me. looks is the only thing that preamp has going for it, but who cares about looks? I would however, like to video myself smashing one with a ball pein hammer. :D Really, of all the preamps I have heard(and ive heard many..) ,the avalon, RNP, and the DBX 786 are 3 I dont care if I ever see again. Nails on a chalkboard. On every source. I normally wont rule preamps out, because they normally sound decent (to me) on something or other, but not those 3.

Any comments on the Mindprint DTC? Your reviews are a little mild mannered and I want to know how you really feel. :)

i have the vtb1 and im veyr impressed with it. i cant listen to the files to compare the two, but i will definately recomend the vtb1 pre amp. it is serving me very well and i love the sound for the price.

the ONLY thing im dissapointed with it
NO POWER SWITCH! that drives me nuts. i hate having to plug/unplug the ac adapter everytime. and im scared one time when i pull it out, it's gona short circuit it
