VST Instruments not registering

Why are my VST instruments not registering? Some do (mainly the Computer music free stuff), but the other ones don't (especially Sample Tank and Free Alpha). I run the VST adapter which recognises them and lists them, but they don't then appear on my Synth Rack - any ideas??? Help me - I'm stuck with Cyclone and the demo edition of VS at the moment.

Have you updated to the latest version of the VST-adapter?

yes - Sonar 3 with 3.11 patch (I use the bundled VST Adapter v 4)

So they show up in your VST adaptor when you run it.... before you push finish to end the process? If so, try running the Sonar Plug in Manager.... go down to DXi's and hit the exclude button... they may be excluded for some reason. Let us know how that turns out.

my question relates to rjt's, so you've actually installed the vsti, more importantly into a folder that the cakewalk vst adaptor checks? One thing that happened to me was i installed a vsti but before sonar recognized it, i had to go into the folder in which i installed it. In there there was a file that i had to open which promped me for a serial number. I entered it and everything worked fine.

good luck

I tried the above - thanks but it didn't do it

When I run the VST adapter again I get this error:

Scanning for VST plug-ins...: vstconfig.exe - unable to locate component

This application has failed because CWDXPX1.dll was not found. Re-installing the component may fix this problem.

I tried re-installing Sonar (I couldn't find a way to just install the VST adaptor) but this didn't help. There are several instances of this file (CWDXPX1.dll ) all associated with different plug-ins. However, if this for a particular plug in (and the error comes up when the VST adaptor is in the middle of scanning - not at the beginning) I cannot work out which one. Also, the VST are not in the excluded folder on the plug in manager.

I copied the CWDXPX1.dll into the VSTCONFIG.exe folder and it got rid of the error, but didn't solve the main problem. I did notice that I don't think that the missing VST's were listed in the final list that flashes up, although they were in the configuration list.

Okay so two things:

1) Try rerunning the VST adapt. Check re-scan failed plug-ins (sometimes I checked re-scan existing plug ins also.... wouldn't do it everytime). See if that makes a difference.

2) After you have done that, if they still don't show up, then go to the plug in manager, go to DXi, hit the excluded button and see if they are listed there. If so, then include them

Keep us posted.

(I have had to register plug-ins as well, but they usually showed up in the list and wanted a serial # when I tried to open them... however, never hurts to try... so if a plug in also functions as a stand alone, try opening it in stand alone... register it and then run the vst adapt.)

Goooood Luck!

One more thing... what are a couple of the plug ins you are trying to register? That may give us some clues as well. I had that hardest time with Imposcar..... thought I registered it.... turns out the serial # had an O not an 0!

Take Care

Tried the above - no luck :(

The ones I really want (but which I'm having probs with) are;

Sampletank
mda Piano
Free Alpha

Okay..... did the plug ins show up (this time) in the VST adaptor after you scanned them (but not in Sonar). Don't shoot me, sometimes we all forget the basics.... the .dll of the plug ins you mentioned are all in a folder that the VST adaptor is pointing to?

Finally, if you want to reinstall the adaptor, (I think) you can do a custom install from the Sonar disk and just select what you want to install. I have installed various effects this way.

Do any VSTs show up? You could also try resetting the adaptor. Delete the folders it is scanning and rerun the scanner. Then nothing should show up as a VST. Re-add the folders and try it again.

Hmmmm, strange problem... I have used Free Alpha and that worked okay. Not on my system now though.

Let us know what happens

Do a complete reinstall of the Cakewalk VST-adapter.

I actually ended up doing a complete uninstall and reinstall of Sonar after trying the above. I now have what I want on there, but haven't tried doing a new registration to see if it picks it up - I think I'll try that next.
