vs 880 problems

I am currently recording on my vs 880, and I am having some problems with my scsi port. Every time I plug a cable into it, the system automatically shuts down. Are there any special procedures to do before gaining access to the port? Also, if it is a glitch in the system, how would I be able to get it fixed?
If I am not able to use my scsi port, are there any other ways of getting my files onto the computer with minimal noise. I have been using the master out rca cables sent directly through the line in port via a converter from rca to 1/8 size. When I do this, though, there is some extra hiss added to the tracks. Any help would be appreciated.
thanks, gaelan

Shut it off first!

Are you trying to connect the scsi cable while the 880 is still powered up? You're lucky you haven't fried it yet! Always shut down your 880 before connecting anything scsi to it.

What are you connecting to the 880? A burner, disk drive, or your PC? Whatever it is, make sure all the components are shut down.

As for the hiss you get when you record through the 1/8 minijack there are some very good programs out there with hiss filters that do a pretty good job. Cool Edit and SoundForge are just a couple. Cheers

don't connect to computer!

As far as I know, you can't go directly to your computer without some real wrangling!! You can fry your VS or worse by connecting SCSI cable to PC and VS. They aren't compatible. I hope someone else can offer some more suggestions for getting VS data to the PC. Maybe you already have done what you need to make this work, in which case you can ignore this, but if not DON'T DO IT!!

Best luck,

Thanks for the replys. I really don't know what the problem is with my 880. Whether it is on or off, it won't work with the scsi. I tried to connect my zip drive while it was turned off, but when I turned it back on, it would only click on and off. Are there any certain ways to connect a zip drive? Do you have to do any procedures on the 880 before it is compatible? Also, how do the digital in/out connectors work? Would they make for better quality in transporting the audio to other sources? thanks, gaelan

Check Scsi #

gealan,

Every Scsi Device is assigned an ID Number including the scsi card plugged in to your computer. Make sure every device has a different #. Such as assigning the VS 880 #5 and the scsi card #7.

Hope this works. Good luck!!!

Is that a serial ZIP drive? If so, unplug it immediately and step away from the VS. You can SERIOUSLY fry your machine plugging in the wrong type scsi drive.

Which model VS do you have? How are you planning to get the data into the PC. The above post is absolutely correct and this can't be done just by connecting the SCSI out. There are some utilities that can convert olde-880 files recorded in MAS mode to .WAV format. However, no MT1, MT2, or LIV files can be converted. They use the Roland RDAC compression algorithms and can't be read by the PC.

Incidentally, the new VS890 has .WAV file writing capabilities.

You're pretty much assured to have noise if you pass your song into the computer through the analog jacks. Try to make a digital connection between the VS and your PC if possible.
