I am looking into purchasing either the Roland 1680 or the Korg D16. I do like the touch screen on the Korg, and it is compact. The Roland looks a bit more difficult, but the screen looks easier to follow (it is twice the size). It seemed that the Korg's screen only displayed 8 tracks at a time. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Get to a reputable music dealer and demo both of them. Spend at least an hour with each machine. Aks questions. Above all, let your ears be the judge (use the same monitors with each machine if possible).

If you decide to go with the Roland, consider getting the 1880 instead of the 1680. The A/D converters are 24 bit instead of 20, and the 1880 has better CD burning capabilites, not to mention 2 extra tracks.

I don't have any experience withe Korg so I can't help you there.

I bought the D16, it was cheaper, touch screen (more hands on), built in drum machine, compact (mobile which I wanted), great scrub features, built in FX board (record tracks dry and edit) etc, etc. There is nothing wrong with the Roland, I just decided on the D16, I have had no trouble with it so far, I am also about to buy a CD writer for it that's compatable (so I can have my own CD's obviously but can also download track data so I can clear the hard disc and do more work-when I want to recall the info just insert the CD-handy).

Do a search, there have been a few of these discussions.

Have you had anydifficulty with the fact that the screen of the D16 only displays 8 tracks at a time?

the new yamaha hard disc recorder kills both of those machines. for the price of the 1880 or 1680 with 2 fx cards and external cd burner you can get the yamaha with built in cd burner,24 bit high sample rates uncompressed audio more simultaneous( did i spell it right?)recording and play back tracks automation and dedicated meters and sliders. i have an 880 ex but that yamaha looks good. but i love the 880ex as long as YOU can do what YOU need and want to do get what floats your boat.

The Yamaha looks good, but will cost considerably more than the Roland or Korg. You'll have to also shell out extra $$$ for analog or digital cards to get the input signals into the machine.

As far as I can tell from the specs at the moment (the Yamaha isn't shipping until Sept) there are the same digital and analog ins and outs on the Yam as on the Rol or Akai. It is just that the Yam gives you two expansion slots if you wish to add say ADAT, Tascam or additional analog in and out. Again, as far as I can tell, the Yamaha will be about twice as big as the Roland or Akai, but have motorized faders, 4 bad eq and be able to serve the function of a mixer a bit better. I am seriously considering the Yamaha because with an ADAT in out, it will dump WAV files (something the Roland can't do) 8 tracks at a time into and out of the computer, so it will be a nice portable DAW which will interface nicely with the computer. I believe it also has two extra mix down tracks. Also, unless I am incorrect, the Akai drops down to an 8 track machine when you use high bit depth. In the final analysis, the think the Roland vs 1880 and Yamaha are pretty competitive price wise and the Akai is a bit cheaper. I am interested in hearing more about what people have to say about any of these as I have not committed money to any one of the three machines.

I've been in touch with several of the big music stores and they seem to think early to mid Sept. Originally it was May, then July now Sept. I believe Yamaha delivers good products and are hoping to fix the bugs. One plus is that the software is upgradable via internet downloads.
