Brand new vocals ... in which I employed a doubling effect for phrasing emphasis.

Any/all comments welcome -- for they always help.

Thanks!

Thanks to Mixmkr for his patience, persistance and guidance in helping me complete this mix. Perspective is everything while mixing, and impossible to achieve alone.

Newest mix is on the link above.

I like this mix of the song K. It sounds awesome to me. I was wondering, isn't this the song that I screwed up the lyrics to "America the Beautiful" on before? Is it left out this time? If so why?

I like it though. This one sounds real good to me.

I liked this. Had an 80's movie-themed song feel to it (if that made any sense)... Definitely has a sound of its own. Ya know... I don't think I'd change a thing. Sounds great to me. Very unique sound.

It is, bud ... and although artistically the mangled recording fit the message, I'm not sure that legally it would have been kosher, as I didn't have permission to use the recording. So I opted to omit it.

Glad you liked the new version though!

It did make sense, PI. Think "Live and Let Die" ... for that's sort of what the melodic hook reminds me of.

... although the song structures are completely different.

Thanks for your thoughts!

Sounds fine to me. Well balanced. Everything is there. My only critique would be to dry out the snare some. Seems to roomy to me compared to the rest, but that's purely personal preference. It's certainly not a mix problem.

This is real good Kevin, it's been a while since I've heard anything from you, but then again I haven't been to the other forum for a while.
I like the crisp, clean, punchy, feel, the vocals are just a bit hot maybe, but you sound good, so it could be just my taste, the capture, production, performance, and for the most part the mix are all impressive.
I thought The Cars when it first started.
Nicely done, as always.
Regards,

I loved the guitar in the intro. Well performed all around.

My only complaints are with the reverbs on things. The drums have a rather large verb to them. The guitar not so much - except the lead guit, which is pretty huge. The vocals have a weird reverb and/or delay to them. It's all over the place. Everything seems like it's in a different space.

Could maybe use a little stronger low end too.

Yeah, loved the early guit... and now I'm loving the lead guit sound... As always I love your distinctive vocal and mixing style K-dub. Everything always clear and punchy... The only problem is that I didn't get a clear political message :)

Sounds great to me Kev, only thing I would do is melt the voice more into the rest, but that's no big deal. Great songwriting and performance!
It reminded me of Donald Fagan in a good way.

Actually, it's more observational than critical ... mostly just saying that the two party system doesn't work well with the over influence of money in the electoral process ...

Marching lockstep
Take you places
Special interests control
Campaigns serve their moneyed masters
Careful not to rock the party boat

... because no matter what candidate wins, both parties have been bought -- and you wind up with the same 'ol, same 'ol entrenchment of politics. Change is always promised and always nothing changes (see: Obama)

Candidates all promise change
And they say they're the ones who can change things
What exactly can they change?
Nothing changes
Party reigns ...

The result being ineffectual government that makes more excuses about how the other side is being obstinate than actually getting the business of the public accomplished:

Are elections thin illusions
Between a choice of two few?
Choose a person
You get their party

That's how its done when it gets done in Washington
Where "cut and run"
Is all about the spin

Throw bombs behind
Hard party lines
When others lose
We win

... consequently raising the question "Why vote at all?" ... which is the essential meaning of the opening lines of the song:

Show me that a vote still matters
Show it's not for show
For it seems that each November
Winds of change delivers status quo

If money is going to be unrestricted as free speech (recent Supreme Court ruling), more parties are needed in order create a balance against the bought dynamic -- meaning it is easy to concentrate on two moving targets and generally exert control, but much harder with multiple moving targets --- like herding cats.

... and the song ends with that encouragement -- and the only way it will happen ... ironically, is if you vote and make your vote matter.

Time to end the party's party
Time to let them know
Time to call the party's over
Time to send them all home
Pop the special party favors
and put them out of business
(new lyrical change)
Time to visit other parties
Time to send that message when we vote

From the comments, I think I need one last pass at this. I believe that I'm in the right neighborhood, but need to focus on minor spatial issues when I return. Thanks to all who chipped in their two cents and you all have my warm appreciation for your help!

Hey K-dub,

I’m from Australia, so I can’t comment on US politics with any authority at all. And this ain’t no political blog anyway. But I will say, that from the outside (which I can talk about)... Obama just makes your whole country (apart from the Tea Party) sound a whole lot wiser than the previous model. Seriously, Bush always looked way out of his depth, and the whole idea of him being a puppet for vested interests was really too obvious.

Another topic I can’t help having an external view on is U.S. Healthcare. The U.S. seems to outsiders to have a very individual and libertarian attitude toward what is a really a community issue. The problem I guess for the U.S. is that if you have universal healthcare then the government has the right to tell you to wear a helmet, or a seat belt... and perhaps even to tell you to get rid of your gun?

I still feel free when I put on my seat belt... At least, more free than Americans who can’t afford health care.

End Rant.
