Volume prob with 1204FX

Hi,

I have a Xenyx 1204FX and I'm using it with my Strat; a Quadraverb Plus; and a V-Amp Pro. I suspect that there maybe something wrong with the Trim button on the 1204FX. I have my guitar on channels on one and two, I have the sliders as high as 10.5 and the main mix sliders up to 10 to get a decent volume. The trims are set at 3 o'clock and the guitar channels are not clipping. I have been told that the sliders and Trims set this high are not normal, is this correct?

Also, when I move a trim button from around 4 o'clock up to 5 o'clock, I get a sudden burst of volume, which I find strange.

Can anyone help?

If I only had a dollar every time I see someone posting about having a problem with their Behr mixer ...

Do you have the guitar plugged directly into the mixer? If so, that's your problem - the mixer does not have a preamp suitable to boost an electric guitar signal.

Tell us how you have your signal chain set up.
 
you'd be better off to mic it or use a d/i box. these would be your best options if mike is correct.

Thanks for your response. I should have made it more clear as to what my chain is.

CS Strat into >> a Behringer V-Amp Pro >> Alesis Quadraverb Plus >> 1204FX Mixer >> Skytec Pro 204 Amp >> Studiomaster 200w speakers.

I am playing at home only, I have the amp set very high at 3 o'clock to get a decent tone and volume. I'm told that at this setting on the amp and mixer, then it should be blowing the house apart!

OK, now you've given us the chain! Why do you have the mixer in the chain at all?
 
Good question Mike. Thought it gave me additional eq and control for recording. I've only been in this game around 3 yrs, so any advice would be great.

What would your ideal set up be with my gear?

Which output of the V Amp are you feeding to the Quadraverb? A quick look at the Behringer manual suggests that there is quite a mix of different impedances and levels while the Alesis is looking for a nice standard line level (+4dBu nominal, +20dBu peak). If you're using one of the outputs that's significantly lower than this, that could be the source of your problem.

From the V-Amp left and right outputs (Analogue Unbalanced Out) - to the left and right inputs on the Quadraverb.
