I am using winxp with CEP2. I can only hear myself on playback but not in real time. I checked my desktop sound controls and could not find the
'line in' output level even when I selected 'advanced controls. Where and how do I find and activate this control? thx

There are two panels there.
Playing control and Recording control panel.
Double click on your desktop icon opens playing control.
You need to go Options/ Preferences and then choose Recording to open that recording control panel.
I used to have both of those open all the time while recording. No need to close them.
Just minimize them.

No - there is no level output for the line in function. So basically I can put a signal into my comp but the signal does not come back to me in real time. Only when I play back what I have recorded onto a track can I hear what I have played. Hopefully this makes more sense. thx for feedback.

That's strange!
I used to mute that Line in signal while recording vocal (my own)
But when I recorded guitar I used to turn up to wished level.
(The card was SB Live)

I use M-Audio F410 today so it's a little different.

What card do you use? Let's start from there...
Some cards don't support this kind of monitoring

VIA High definition audio with Legacy audio driver
according to my device manager.

You need a full duplex card to record/monitor at the same time. Most cards are like this though even older on-board ones.

Open your control panel for playback (not the recording one) and un-mute line-in and see if that works. Then un-mute the microphone one just in case you have the mic plugged into the mic jack instead.

If that doesn't work, you can try Reaper (www.Reaper.fm) it has a built in direct monitoring but if your card isn't full duplex I'm not sure if it will work, but it should.
