I just finished this up and I'd like to know what you guys think. I thought about getting a girl to sing it... but that was too much work. meh

Lol. Super cheese! This is better than that other one.

My only nits are the rhyhtm guitars in the chorus have some fizz-harshness in the upper mids, and the drums are mega robotic.

Hi there..

If I was tracking this, I'd hit the keys player's left hand with a stick every time he reached for the joystick - I don't think that vibrato effect ever sounds good, but that's a personal opinion. As Greg says, I think you could do more with the drumming and it's a bit far back in the mix for me.. but I'm only listening on small headphones - the snare rolls sound like exactly the same sample which give it that robotic sound... what are you using there?

I also have a preference for a rougher sounding guitar (not more fuzz, just dirtier) to sort of counterpoint the keys sound a little...

Cheers :)

Wow. This is a much more literal cover than I expected. The drum sound seems kind of appropriate given the era this is from, no? I mean, it isn't a drum sound I might pick otherwise, but it seems pretty authentic to this sorta thing...what were they called? Till Tuesday, right? Aimee Mann went on to do some pretty cool hippie beatle-esque kind of stuff when she grew up, but this tune was like a shopping mall anthem or something, wasn't it? Anyway, I like the fact that you did not get a girl to sing it. I thought the mix sounded pretty good.

Nice recording, a surprising choice for a cover, (because it was a kinda played out song in the 80s) but I must say the album Til Tuesday this is from is actually very good, unlike most albums there isnt any filler, all the songs are quite good. I think the girl on bass was very talented. Overall nice job. Ive heard your stuff before always sounds good. What is your set-up?

Nice DMV! Strange hearing the song with male vocals but good never the less.

I was in Boston trying to make it in that jungle, damn 30 years ago now, when when bands like Private lightning and "til tuesday hit the scene ... It was time to rethink the game plan.

Keep it up DMV!

Yeah, I noticed the frequencies on the guitars after you mentioned it. Now it's all I can hear. Thanks. haha

Yeah, I can barely play the keyboard. So the mod wheel was too tempting for me to abuse. :)

Exactly. I wanted to try and get the drums, keys, bass, and clean guitar to be as close to the original as possible. So the drums were definitely more synthetic sounding in the original so I recorded them that way too. So I went through and tried to recreate the tones and feeling of all the instruments, then just added the distorted guitars and my vocals on top to change it up. I was pretty proud of myself for getting as close as I did.

I really didn't want to sing on it until I thought to just change all the lyrics to a 3rd person perspective so I could get away with lines like "when she tells him that she's falling in love" rather than "when I tell him..." haha

Thanks. I was doing some cleaning around the house and had the radio on and that song came on. I hadn't heard it for many years so I thought it would be interesting to get out of my comfort zone and try something really different.

My setup is pretty modest. I do all my recording on my laptop. My interface is an M-Audio Fastrack USB. and I'm using Sonar as my app of choice. I plug directly in to the fastrack with my guitar and bass. The drums are all midi. My vocals are done using a simple SM58.

Nice! Did you hang with Aimee Mann at all? So hot...

Thanks for the response guys!

Nah I'm more like a sexy male blow-up doll.

I've listened a couple of times now. I think you stayed too true to the original. Pop-punk covers of 80's tunes are mega cliche, but this needs the big change that takes it from faithful cover to rock explosion of hilarity. Think if like NOFX covered this. They'd blow it apart. That's all.

The vocals are way too low in the mix. Yes you should try and get a chick to sing this. The rest is fabulous!
