Voice losing tempo

I'm planning to start a small voice recording studio, and I'm just testing my voice with karaoke tracks with Nuendo.

Mine is a PC with 3GHz, ordinary sound-card and 256MB RAM. I'm recording with computer mic-headphone.

Though I'm singing along with the music track, when I play back, I get my voice losing tempo.

Is this because of the sound-card or RAM? I know that I'll have to buy a better mic, a mixer, another sound card and a converter...

Thanks.

When you say 'losing tempo' do you mean it starts correct and loses it during the playback? If this is the case, it sounds like it's down to the ram - although one channel recording shouldn't take up too much.. it could be down to the mic-headphone?

If your not on such of a budget - i'd recommend purchasing the mic and soundcard you're after and have another go.

Hi Tifstorey....

Thanks for your reply. However, I have got an excellent solution which works perfectly alright with even my sound card Realtek AC97.

Just googled and read somewhere about ASIO4ALL.com, which is a free ASIO driver for almost any card. I just installed it and latencies of input and output became equal at 25ms with 512 buffer size. It goes down to 13/13ms with 256. So, now with Realtek AC97 and my comp's headphone-mic I can record song in one stretch from beginning to end without losing a single beat.

Realtek AC97 doesn't really produce a great sound for meeting even home studio standard, but it's not bad for testing the water before buying expensive cards.

Hope this helps newbies like me...

Glad you got it sorted. Never heard of that before, but at least you managed to find out the source of the problem.

Tif,
