I'm looking to get a vocoder sounding plug in so I can make vocals sound like that Cher song!

Anyone know of any free plug ins or if its possible to use any of the Waves plug ins like Doubler, Enigma.

I found this free VST, Vintage Vocoder.

But I cant seem to get the Cher effect, sounds more just like a mono-tone robot rather than actually robotized notes.
I also tried using Auto-tune to get the Cher effect but with no luck.

Any ideas on how to get this effect?

Cheers,
Eck

Cubase SX2 upwards has a built-in vocoder, which I've heard used to good effect.

May I just ask, if you have autotune and a 'monotone robot' sounding plugin, won't using both at once do what you want??

you have to use specific autotune settings to get it to work...if I remember correctly, you turn up the function that corrects out of tune pitches to it's maximum sensitivity, and you turn the reaction time all the way up...it's been a few years since i've tried this though...and it helps to have someone like cher who sings so horribly out of tune:p

waves tune works great. select all of the notes and turn the knobs all to the left except for the amount of correction (you will probably have to do some sliding of the notes to get the right sound). i just had a mix you can listen to in the mp3 section, but no one seems to like the effect haha. but anyways. there is a tiny learning curve and the plugin does cost $600 by itself. However, it is a very usable plugin on almost every vocal track so it may be well worth the money to you

good luck!

Cool, I'll look into the Cubase Vocoder.

Using the montone robo-majigger and autotune would mean I would have to set each note manually Im sure.

Yeah I already tried it with the fastest/most sensitive settings and it worked a bit but nowhere near as solidly as I would have hoped.

Thanks for the info.
Ill take a listen to your song and post in there.

That's because Vocoder's require you to tell them what notes to use. Usually you use a keyboard and play it along with the vocal line.

Aye, that makes sense.
I was hoping that there was an "easy" way to do that effect. :)

Cher FX?

Well, I use AutoTune to get the Cher FX. Change to manual and draw the
straight line the get the FX. :D

the "cher" effect

its not really quite the cher effect that im looking for, but something along those lines. robotic etc. hellogoodbye uses it. i just purchased the autotune 5 plug in for the sole reason of getting this effect. ive read the entire manual and it seems that the program is made to simply make the voice sound natural which is the opposite of what i want. i have made some progress, the effect just isnt as dramatic as i need any tips?

you have to realize that like many other programs/gear, autotune was made to made things sound natural, but can be used to completely mangle stuff as well...

Try using a pitch corrector plug-in. Then on an aux channel use a pitch shifter (try a 3rd and 5th for starters, but you'll have to play around with it depending on the song) plug in and mix the signals together so you have balance between the original pitch and the pitch shifted effects. Maybe add a little overdrive at a high frequency to it also.

I just dont like vocoders :p

They didn't vocode all the notes in "Believe". They actually left some syllables here and there unprocessed. For the effect, you need to follow the vocal melody on the vocoder (i.e. play it like a synth) for it to sound right. You will also need to play those notes (on the vocoder) with the correct timing. You may also need to compress and EQ the voice prior to the vocoder to make the words sound more intelligible. It isn't enough to just trap on a vocoder.
