I use an MXL 990 mic and audiobuddy preamp plugged straight into line-in....my question is ..Why do my vocals have a wide stereo field and not centred in the track...should I phase?....if so....how much do I phase?...or do I need to buy a mixer....Im quite new to recording and any help would be appreciated

What do you mean by "wide stereo field?" If you mean that the track is only in the left speaker, it's probably because you're recording a mono source (voice & microphone) to a stereo track. Select a mono track in your software and make sure the pan control is centered. There should be no phasing with one mic and one voice.

so what your saying is that I should record my vocals mono...I always record stereo....its just sounds that the vocals arent centred....they sound very wide from left to right

If you are using ONE microphone, you should record a MONO track. There is only one signal to capture, the signal from the one microphone. Once you have your mono track recorded, you can use your mixer software to pan it anywhere you'd like it (vocals are usually centered, but background vocals can be sent to one of the sides if you'd like)
