Vocals are too clear

Heh, when we recorded our demo tracks, some of the vocals sounded like they were recorded in a wet closet.

Well, they were, but no matter what I did post tracking I couldn't really lessen it. :P

Let it be known, a bad room makes the whole mix sound bad, even if all the instruments were not recorded in it. ;)

The best thing to do is to deaden your room for vocals especialy. This means you have mostly only the direct sound of the vocal and minimum nasty room reverbs. Then you can add reverb at mixing.

I've recorded a few songs but my vocals are way too clear . . . . . . they almost sound "live". What can I do to smooth out the sound of these vocals. I can hear every lips smack, breath . . . . . . .

I suspect you need to turn the vocal tracks down a bit. Otherwise, I'm with these guys. Try sending the vocal track into distortion, chorus, verb and delay. If that doesn't muddle things up enough, try mumbling.

And if that doesn't wok, I've got a "Joe Cockerifyer" plugin :)

A little more distance between the singer and the mic might be usefull... try having your windscreen a little further away. Having enough space for afist between the mic and the windscreen should do the trick.

yea, get to far in on a condenser and it'll burn your ears off.
but that's a fairly "dark" mic,
what are your pre's like? all my cheeper pre's (most of them) bite ass in the hi's.

try singing over the mic a little, seriously, put the mic about 2 inches lower and sing over it (not down into it)

I would get as close to the mic as I can but not sing directly into it, set the volumes appropriatly, sing to a track that is only vocals, clean up the track by deleting everything outside of the lines to the song. (lipsmacks, not all by unneded breaths, burps and throat clears...

then the track will be nice and loud, so fit it into the mix, and add a tad of reverb, dont compress it unless you have to, since this will make the lipsmacks etc more noticeable. play it back during recording, and if you get one of these sounds, retake it instead of trying to fix it afterwards.

Well, considering your name is David Duke, you might want to pull the hood down and use it as a windscreen.

:D :D Yeah that would definitely take care of it......Those hoods are pretty thick :p

Seriously though try losing as much comp as possible on tracking.......Comp can really increase breathiness/lip smacking and so on...

are the sounds really detracting from the quality of the take that much? are they louder than the actual singing? do the sounds leap out of the mix? a human breaths, a mouth makes sounds, a voice will crack at times... these are all part of the take as much as anything else. these things add character to a take. it seems that nowdys way way to much emphasise is placed on a take being as clean as possible. imo this attitude causes alot of modern recording to be very sterile. often people will over edit a peice so muc that it pulls out alot of the natural dynamic. this is the worst part of modern recording i think. alot of stuff sounds really fake to me.

seriously, though..

what is your pre and microphone? if your pre has nasty cheap high end hype and your mic has nasty cheap high end hype than this is could be what you are hearing. death by pro audio marketing.

did you actually think any of that was serious? lighten up man.

HAHA! No, fool. I think it's pretty obvious who needs to lighten up. Someone has trouble detecting sarcasm. A little uptight maybe?

sorry, i guess i need to work on my ability to detect sarcasm in a text format...

isnt sarcasm typically meant to either be funny or mean? i dont see how "no you didnt" can be funny, and if you meant the opposite by sarcasm how can it be mean? whatever man...
