i do a lot of screaming vocals for my studio [bleh i know]

but i have so many problems getting it to sound good...

does anyone have any suggesiton?!?! like mor low end? more mid? treble?

seriously ANY suggesitons are welcome.

and does anyone have a good CHEAP vocal plug in [which doesnt require any special programs] ??????

i need a nice plug in to add some color to the vocals.

thanks :]

[ps i also need some advice for doing a pop punk voice, thanks ]

I think your problem probably has less to do with EQ and more to do with compression, where you're recording your vox, what mic you're using, etc.
A lot of the hardcore bands I listen to (Converge, esp.) put a light to medium distortion on their vocals, which acts as major compression and really emphasizes the overtones present in the scream.
Also keep in mind that monitoring is a HUGE factor in hearing something "right." If your monitors or your room aren't set correctly, you could be missing a lot of the sounds of your scream due to destructive interference and the like.
Also, have you ever listened to yourself scream before? Do the people you're working with think your scream sounds the same recorded as it does in real life? Ask them for advice on what needs to be changed (if it sounds too thin, too middy, etc.).

What he said...

What kind of mic? Pre? Are you right up on the mic? You'll get proximity effect if ya are.

What's the scoop?

.................Quit screaming so much.

Some good advice above - how does it sound naturally in the room? If you don't like it, you won't like it recorded.

From my experience....use a dynamic mic. I know all vocalist like to use condensors....but in reality, lower lever condensors wont work nearly as good as lower level dynamics on screaming vocals. I use a sm57 and i get really good results. Another andvantage to using a dynamic is (everyone will probably shun me for this) because the singer can hold the mic and get more into it without as much noise. That makes a big difference from my experience. For distortion i found a free vst plugin called tube warmth or something along those lines. I think i found it here http://www.kvraudio.com/get.php. It can give you some pretty cool sounds fairly easily. Well thats all the advice i got.

In for the easy joke.... It's screaming... it isn't going to sound good. :)

That said, what part doesn't sound good? It is thin? Distorted? Not distorted enough? Muffled? Too bright/dark? Too much room? Not enough? Details!

well, an sm57 works well for screaming. easy on the gain, clips easy because screamers like to get real close on that mic. try backing off the mic if you can, i know its hard to do becuase screamers like to shove it in their mouth and arch over and do all the moves......

i just got a chance to read all of these and ok here goes..

i ahve a vtb1 studio projects tube pre amp, i can either use a sm58, sm57, mxl 990 condensor, or at2020 mic for the vocal's. my at2020 are not wiht me as of now, there at ym dads and i dont have acess to them for a tiny bit..... but i sitl have them

and my problem is when i put it with the mix to the music, the music is greta but it just doesnt mix well together, the vocals are too like.. fake.

i perosnally dont scream. im not veyr good at vocals whatsoever. but even good vocalist ahve come in and i have problems, im definately gona tyr the distorion idea. ive listened to converge for a while and noticed they have distoriton in eveyrhting haha but i never thought about the voice.

ill tyr putting more gain on it, and work with my compressor and add that to the mic chain.

if anyone ahs ANY vocal program suggestions [plug ins] PLEASE PLEASE tell me. i know NOTHING about plug ins. i dont even know brands. its just something i never had to think about til now [cause my studio is finally becoming a complete studio]

thanks for the responses everyone

ps- i know a lot of people dont liek screaming, but recording it sucks.... i only like hearing it, i love to record a good pop punk voice, always the funnest.

I can't believe it! You just listed the best 54 current artists!

The digital fishphones plugins are very nice (and free), check out the Blockfish compressor from them, particularly (the Spitfish and Dominion might come in handy, too): http://www.digitalfishphones.com/main.php?item=2&subItem=1

Experiment with different reverbs and delays to make your vocals sit better in the mix. Some good freebies to try out are the Kjaerhus Classic Reverb & Delay (download all the Classics, they're pretty handy): http://www.kjaerhusaudio.com/classic-series.php & the GlaceVerb: http://www.dasample.com/index.php?show=glaceverb

For distortion, I like Cubase's "Da Tube" on vocals, but there are plenty of others out there if you search around.
