Obviously every vocal is different and requires mixing differenly but now I have a decent set up, does anyone have any links to online mixing guides that can help me just get the basic process right?

Such as something that might read:-

1. Compression
Go for a 4:1 ratio with a softknee curb

2. Normalize
Do this, that and the other.

Basically something that'll take my raw vocals and get them into a state at which they are ready for 'fine tuning'.

You answered your own question there, Ed.

There are no recipies.

Yes, but is there an online guide as to how to make your vocal sound a certain way?

What everyone will tell you is to use your ears and that there is no tutorial for getting the James Brown vocal sound. So think seriouly about how you want your vocal track to sound. THINK long and hard, well at least for 10 minutes. Maybe compare your vocal track to a pro record that you want to mimic. After you know what your vision is then you can begin the long road to taming that raw track.

Now..

I have only recorded 1 vocal session that has not required compression. I think most people use a lot of compression on vocals. You don't want your vocals (most likely) to sound overly loud in some spots and very quiet in others. So set your compression level to 2:1 with a fast attack and a fairly long release and apply some make up gain so that your level is the same as the recorded source. Play the track, does it sound better or worse? If it is still too jumpy then increase that ratio and crush those peaks. Boost the make up gain again. LISTEN to how your changes affect the audio.

EQ, Reverb, Delay, Effect sends, Insert effects, Ugh, the road is long.

Normalize, I still don't understand what that means.

normalizing is increasing the level to the highest it can be without clipping and going over 0dbfs. There is never any reason to do this with vocals. If I'm lyin I'm dyin.
