more on vocals...

I just monitor myself dry in the hdphones when I'm singing so I don't rely on verb or anything else & hopefully listen more carefully. At the same time the sound I'm hearing isn't that great - too "close miced/up front", maybe bec I am close Maced & up front - about 6-12 inches fr a ribbon mic. I need to be that close as it's not really hot, altho the recorded sound is OK & I am satisfied w adding FX later. I keep thinking I cd get a better take if i had a better feed in the cans but I don't know what that wd be?? Maybe it's just my vocal limitations...Thanks

I have found that unless you are recording a pretty live room... the vocals are going to sound too in the speaker. I am currently having the same problem.. so we started sending reverb (only to my phones). It helped the performance a bit, but in the end.. we still cant find a happy medium in regards to recording dry

I used to have verb in the cans while I sing but found that I wd rely on it too much & get careless in my singing.

Yes, but "comfort reverb" does help a lot of singers - me included

To me it sounds like one of the problems is that you are thinking about how your vocals are coming out. Personally, I say let it go, add the reverb if it makes you feel better about the sound, and forget about the take until after you have laid it down. Allow yourself to feel the performance instead of thinking about it.

As an example, I do a lot of producing as wel as engineering at my place. As a result bands constantly end up trying new things at my request. One of the problems is that sometimes a guitar player for example will have to go in and lay down a track that they have not practiced yet. I always make sure to tell them to notworry about it and to play full on. I explain to them that I would rather hear a big screw up than have them play the track properly, but without feeling and power. In the end, if they are too cautious and hink about it too much they end up playing the notes right and losing the vibe. In this case, i make them go back in and redo it anyhow.
