It has become apparent to me that some of my favorite recordings were NOT made with $2,000 german mics. GOOD! because I don't want one. fuggem. I see very little being written on what NORMAL people record with. some of my favorite bands that do to some or all extent DIY recording are minor threat/fugazi, modest mouse, beastie boys, white stripes. save for the beasties supposedly using whatever trashy mics are lying around, I have found nothing written about what the rest of these bands use. I guess if its not a $2,000 german mic, its not worth writing about. I would also venture to assume that most of these bands are NOT using LDC's. anybody with any USABLE knowledge out there? I would frigging crack up if they all use 58s.

Well U2 has done "O.K." by using Shure SM58's or a Beta 58 for Bono.

The only hitch is to make them perform their best you usually need a transformer based mic pre, although the Studio Projects VTB-1 and Fmr. Audio
RNP (very reputedly) sound good relative to their price points.

I suspect the Joe Meek 3Q edges out the M-Audio DMP3 value-wise also.
(only tried 3Q with LDC). My M-Audio Duo (DMP2) does fairly well with a '57.

Some of them do. Other Indie / DIY staples might include the likes of the AT 4050, Shure SM-7, RE-20, Re-664 and 666. That kinda' thing.

A lot of the "indie" bands probably use these everyday mics. Especially vocalists that do intense, screaming vocals. Would it beneficial to have a $2000.00 tube mic for a guy blasting a vocal into it that would blow your hair back anyway? Probably not. A good "pre",as mentioned above can work wonders in the studio. I think a lot of the great sounds you hear on classic recordings were due to the mixer "pre's" as much if not more than the mics. they used.

THANK YOU!

I did some more reasearch and found that Scott Weiland and Anthony Keidis both use the SM-7. that is useful info...although Weiland's voice sounds pretty different on each album, I wonder which album(s) this mic was used on.

I would still die to know what fugazi uses in the studio. I am also still trying to figure out if the "far" mic on the guitar amps is usually a condenser or dynamic on these albums.

Sm7 was used on Red Hot Chili Peppers Blood Sugar Sex Magic

It appears that some big-selling albums were tracked with kinda "cheap" mics like the SM-7 or Beta 58 -- but with outrageously exensive pres in most cases!
