vocal mic

Getting started with home recording using a pc. Mainly want to record vocals with acoustic guitar and electric guitar.I could spend around 200 for a vocal mic.Can you give me some advice as to what good vocal mics are possible and what I would need to plug into a good sound card on my pc?

Mic Pre? Many choices of price and quality. A Grace 101 will do fine for many things.

However, An "ART" two channel costs less and does a nice job.


Mics? All kinds....all sizes~All shapes. You might poke around at a vendor's place and check out mics. However, an AKG C3000 or the Shure KSM 32 will both be very decent mics.

Others? All kinds and all prices but sometimes a high price does not work for certain types of projects. You would need research and, visit a vendor.

Well, I guess if you are running a mic via Phantom power, that unit may also have mic pres. I have mic pres in my multitracker; however, I use better mic pres. As you may know, "other" mic pres can be fine or may not appeal to whatever unit, units, you are using.

If you have a decent mic, or any mic, you should also look at a mic preamp.

You can use software or hardware to record; I'd probably like to get into some Pro Tools some day; but, it takes time to figure out its ins/outs. Thus, I'm into the hardware.

You can learn from all the good folks here at the forum as to many points of view you can view.

Basically *ALL* microphones (except "toy" microphones, like the ones you'd use in 1970's mono cassette recorders or the ones that plug into a sound-card's 1/8" input) require a preamp. It's not a negotiable point.

If you're strung to a $200 budget, you aren't going to find much. A SM58 (it should be illegal not to own at least one) will run you about $100. A really, really crappy preamp will also run you anywhere from $100 to $500.

You could go with a 58 and M-Audio's DMP3... Not a bad preamp for $150 or whatever they're asking... But you need a preamp.
