It came at the very end...but I knew there would be a food reference! :D
You know how it is, Rams, I gotta dumb things down for those who start every post with either "Lol" or "OK, so..." ;) :D
That to me, is a big part of the reason the musicians today are learning the tune, and learning how to play, in the studio.
I agree with much of your post, but this still begs the question, why in the studio? Why spend the money on either hourly time in a studio or on your own home studio just to learn how to play? Neither one of those is necessary or even helpful to learning how to play. If you really have to spend some money, it's a lot cheaper and more effective to pay for music lessons and a practice space - the latter not even having to cost money.

The answer is because there's been a change in priorities. It's not about making music anymore; it's about making a recording. The music has evolved from being a reason to record to an excuse to record.

In 1980 if you wanted to keep up with the Jonses' kids you had to have a video game. Now you have to have a meSpace or a meTube page with your own recording on it. Whether it's an Atari or a web recording, it doesn't matter if you're any good at it, as long as you have it.

I seem to have some unnatural hate for all the theory bofins in the world, mainly because I went to school with some very upperclass musical kids, who ripped me down calling me shit when all I wanted to do was bang out a tune on a guitar. To this day it is my goal to prove those people wrong. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against theory I would love to know it all. The fact is that I can't learn like that. I try read a book on theory I would like to learn, after 2 mins Im playing an instrument. Thats not to say that I'm as bad as you seem to suggest I would be. I am also a perfectionist, I take months recording songs playing each part as perfect as perfect can be, I use recording a method to make myself a better musician. As well as this I generally think there are all those guys playing guitar, piano e.t.c who have had the best musical education possible but play so so hollow, you can hear the notes, but wheres the emotion? Then there are the musicans who play because they really really feel the instrument, who know nothing, but can play in a way that can make your hairs stand up. My friend for example, just picked up a Bass one day and kept to it cause he loved it, he knows no scales or anything but Is very very good. Like myself, after practicing so long I know exactly where the sound is on the piano/guitar so I can play it without needing theory to explain it. As for the guys in the studio, well they are the breed who play because it is cool, These people are hugely arrogent and some how think not being able to do anything makes them good.

As far as music goes, arrogence and pretention are the worst diseases to have (awear they are not really diseases). Weather you play, record, mix or master. the nature of doubtfullness always pushes you on, pushes you to get better. the moment you think your good, you stop trying. when you are probably bad. there are ALWAYS way to improve

I play everything except the drums...which is the only thing you don't seem to like on my stuff.
What else could I expect from another drummer?! :laughings:

I recall you complimenting me on all the other stuff...
I guess you're taking it back now! :spank:
