What does THIS button do?
Any idea how he gets his drums to sound like they do? From what I can pick up off of it, it sounds like hes using pinstripes on his toms, not sure about the snare and kick but maybe a birch kit and everything is mic'd further than normal in a pretty large room? What do you think?

Well I know on the Ring Of Fire album that was recorded he recorded his drums in his practice room which is about a 10 x 20 or 15 x 20 size room. The room is packed with a huge mix kit of his favorite pieces of different pearl kits.He had a snake that went across the hall into Mark Boals' room. And if I recall correctly I believe Mark said they recorded the latest Planet X album there as well.

FOR THE RING OF FIRE ALBUM.

As for software. Mark was using Protools OS9 still with two Tascam mixers. And he was using on Virgil's drums what he called a magic box. It was an old Neve console taken apart and turned in to a mini 16 channel drum mic pre section.

As for was used on mics for the drums. I dropped off an arsenal of microphones that I had. They included 2 K58's which he used as over heads, he used a CAD M9 that he used as an external kick drum mic and used an audio technica on the inside if I recall correctly. On the toms believe it or not Mark set up large diaphragm condensers a mixture of k25, k35 and the old z3500 from sE the old ones from feilo. Mark placed them about 1n 1" to an 1 1/2" from each of the toms rims tops. As for floor tom he used a side mic an additional side mic if I recall correctly.

MARK, VIRGIL, & TONY all have rooms next to each other and record everything there together with snakes to Mark's room. Tony also record some track at his house with his amp in his closet.

HOPE THIS HELPS YOU OUT IN SOME WAY
