In that version they've just tweaked the arrangement so there should be a C in bar 12 after the E.
What do you want a full score for? Nothing is actually missing in this version, although it's not got the usual pauses in it. If you need the Chords, they're here. I'm not convinced it's really a waltz.

Hi,

Thanks rob; I wanted the full score due to my ignorance; it seemed short compared to other violin music scores I have. There's a lot for me to learn with this score; dot; double dots mostly flat; I need to backtrack a bit because you've already explained the dots but my memory is terrible; it looks to also have slurs & ties; slurs I've practiced a bit with; as you've already said I choose the hardest to play but it's all so interesting to me; I'm like a toddler just learning to walk. I don't understand c 108; mp; f & mf also the eyebrow with dot end of top line; I do understand bow direction.

I'm sorry rob I must really test your kind patience to the limit but I'm now starting to spend more time in the studio; I enjoyed three violin practices yesterday mostly playing around with this score; so many A string notes are new to me but I'm making sense of them; I'm having to use the tuner which I know you advice against but I have so much difficulty remembering; I'll use the tuner though until I become more familiar with finger positions then drop the tuner when I have more confidence; it's going to be a very long learning curve for me; I can research many of these things using the web and I also have the two books Raymond kindly recommended; your time is precious rob; violin playing will never be more than a wonderful hobby to me.

Being fully retired isn't allowing me lots of free time; my lovely wife is unwell so I've been assisting this morning getting dinner ready then I've just put a ginger cake in the oven; next I'm getting the ladders out to hang old CD's in our trees; every day I waste lots of time cleaning up after the manure spreading pigeons; I've also bought a big roll of reflective bird scaring tape through eBay; about three days ago I strimmed the grass it needs strimming again; very little peace at all. Wednesday was a full day of hospital; last night our neighbours son had a 16th birthday bash just across the street until 2am; in fairness the father did visit us to explain what would be happening and lets face it we've all been 16 so we accepted it with good grace but how strange so many things follow on one after another without let up; moan; moan; moan but I'm running just to stand still. I'm surprised I've got thus far with learning to play a violin and in creating the studio; I've got decent recording gear I don't yet fully understand how to use; so much of great interest to me but so little time; I seemed to have more time to myself whilst working full time.

Kind regards, Colin.

The piece is labelled moderato, so a sort of moderate tempo, hovering around what is called crotchet time 108 - as in 108 beats per minute, which is a bit quicker than Simon and Garfunkel. As it's really ancient folk music, it doesn't follow any of the usual formats of intro, verse, verse, chorus etc etc it doesn't have anything other than what you have, so there isn't really a 'full score'. Early music is a bit weird. Back in the baroque era, they'd write a tune, then tell the players what the bass was, and leave them to work out the other notes - figured bass, if you want to Google. Dynamics are indicated so the full range from quiet to loud goes pianissimo (pp), piano (p), mezzo-piano (mp), mezzo-forte (mf), forte (f), fortissimo (ff) - which interestingly is where the piano's proper name the pianoforte, literally meant quiet to loud - until then, harpsichords and other keyboard instruments had a fixed volume. They eye symbol is a fermata - it means pause, so a sort of temporary slow down, then back again.

Hi,

Thanks rob for such a clear and detailed explanation; Trust me to fall down every hole; I'm going to now spend more time in the studio and less time being a keyboard warrior; I've generously received so much useful information and help from both you rob and Raymond I've got more than enough to keep me occupied for quite a while; thank you both. I've tried doing this previously but now I'll do my best to stick with the plan; the computer is a robber of time.

I've done so much heavy work I'm tired; I was very busy as usual this morning strimming the grass again etc; this afternoon I've had the ladders up the trees in order to attach the bird scaring reflective foil.

I've just come out of the studio fed up with myself; nothing at all went right; after the day I've had I couldn't concentrate so packed it in; tomorrow morning I'll be out of bed by 6:00 it's Monday so shopping day; the morning I'm busy but perhaps tomorrow afternoon I'll manage a violin practice; it's all driving me mad; I don't seem to have any control over my life or what I do; I don't go looking for work it comes to me every day without fail. I wanted to copy songs this afternoon to play to but now I can't be bothered I'm worn out; tomorrow is another day and a nights sleep should be a huge help.

I want to forget all about this week it's been bad.

Kind regards, Colin

Hi,

Shopping done by 7:30 this morning and am about to wander into the studio.

Just one question please; which would benefit me most to record and play against; violin solo or actual song?

Kind regards, Colin.

It is really down to taste.
If you go with the actual song, it will give you the right timing.
You may struggle keeping up with it, but it would be good training.
Violin solo would also be good though.

Hi,

Thanks Raymond for your reply. You make a lot of good sense; I think I'll try both to see which I find is better for me; I need to set up my mic and Tascam pocket studio again and start recording from YouTube but as usual it all takes a great deal of time.

I enjoyed three decent violin practices yesterday and will enjoy more today; because of tight time pressures I've been sticking to playing about three tunes only unable to settle and concentrate learning to play other tunes; now I've finally broken through I'm learning other tunes;

Cant Help Falling In Love

Scarborough Fair

I'm actually doing OK and steadily my sight reading is improving I just wish my memory wasn't so poor but I'm happy just playing my violins; Got to go otherwise I'll never get into the studio.

Kind regards, Colin.

Colin, this a good backing track that you might try to use. As Raymond said, it can be a bit quick if you don't have things down, but it would give you good timing practice.

Checking it out, it turns out it's in the wrong key for your music. Em instead of Dm. Bummer. Maybe I could tweak it down and slow it at the same time....

Hi,

This is kind of you TalismanRich thanks so much. I've just played it in its entirety but as you say it's a bit too quick for my level so far; it's also good of you to offer to slow it down but at the moment I wouldn't want to waste your time.

I can easily get the original Simon & Garfunkel on YouTube but this morning frustrated me a great deal; I wasted a morning having set up my mic and Tascam to record from my computer in my office; it took all morning just to copy two songs; copying this way works but is incredibly slow then of course I've got to save and export then open Audacity to edit before finally getting it onto my computer even then I've not finished I've got to copy to memory stick.

I used to have a free program allowing me to copy any YouTube music video at very high speed but it's no longer available; there are many such free sites but untrustworthy; I've tried a couple which are Free but after a free download up pops the demand for money but by now they've got my details opening me up to hackers and viruses; I don't mind paying in the least but I'm now very wary regarding online security; I even bought Beethoven's CD which included Ode To Joy but when I tried to copy directly to stick it refused so I was no better off.

I want to record to memory stick then I can play it on the car radio I've rigged up in the studio which plays sticks but more importantly for me it has a repeat function. I've got a laptop in the studio I want to play around with; it plays sticks and I'm sure it must have headphone socket but I don't know if it has repeat play; everything is taking so much time.

I finally got into the studio about half an hour ago but after 15 minutes came back out; I was too hot to concentrate and things weren't going well so it was pointless struggling just making matters worse; this is why I'm at the keyboard when I really wanted studio time; I hadn't realized how hot it was outside until I got into the studio with my shirt sticking to me; oh hum tomorrow is another day but it's possible I could enjoy a practice this evening when I cool and settle down.

WOW not something I like at all bmg; but I truly appreciate you taking the time to post it; I'm a dinosaur who likes slow and easy. (y)

Kind regards, Colin.

Hi,

A good day today; violin practice this ,morning for an hour which I enjoyed. This afternoon made lots of progress with the laptop in the studio; I could play memory sticks on the laptop but sound output was very low even with earphones so I browsed the web and now it sure is loud; easy if you know how but I've only used the laptop a few times; it also has repeat function so I'm now set up for using earphones to listen and play to backing tracks. Next I'll try playing direct from YouTube through the earphones and see how I get on; it's all new to me but I'm learning.

Kind regards, Colin.

Hi,

An old problem refuses to go away; manure spreading feral pigeons nesting in our big blue spruce tree; every day cleaning up their mess just another job interfering with playing my violins.

I downloaded a Peregrine Falcon singing adding it to memory stick then I used Audacity to make it much louder; next I wandered up the mountain and switched the laptop on; there was a mass evacuation of not only the dirty pigeons but suddenly there wasn't a bird of any kind in sight.

Later in the day the pigeons were back so up I went again but this time they just laughed at me cooing directly above my head. Yesterday morning I browsed the web and found these pigeons usually breed springtime and autumn.

Near the tree top were two large nests;

Pigeons_0007_01.webp

I spent all morning evicting these unwanted residents being absolutely sick of them. Four long lengths of timber bolted together with a bit of angle iron at the top; it was a nightmare of a job getting this up to the nests due to the many twigs; I removed two nests I knew about but found a third so the lot are now history. No eggs and no chicks which pleased me because I didn't want to hurt them but my arms ached then; the steepness of the branches makes it very difficult indeed to climb this tree; I went up over ten years ago with my 20" petrol chainsaw and "Topped" it removing 15' but now aged 75 I found it too much of a challenge. Normally I live and let live; both myself and my wife are animal lovers but these pigeons were causing us so much trouble. The pigeons love bombing the car immediately I've cleaned it.

Pigeons_0003_02.webp

Pressure washed only a short while ago I'm totally fed up of these problems; retired 22 years and still little studio time although I am practicing more each day; I feel sad having to resort to such action but my options were very limited.

I've been baking this morning but after dinner I've got studio time then next week if more problems don't arise I can really indulge myself which I'm looking forward to.

Music score_0001.webp

Possibly highly frowned upon but I'm working around what I can do not what I should do; my memory is terrible and although I've tried to remember notes being played by tune I'm finding it incredibly difficult but it won't stop me learning; I'm sight reading and making progress aided by adding string and note to the score as shown but I'm finding as I play I'm starting to recognize the notes and can get reasonably near on the strings; sharps & flats are going to be string position rather than playing by tune at least for now but playing like this is allowing me to improve and much better than giving up as so many do and not play at all. Eventually things should become easier as I gain more experience and I can dispense with such aids but in the meantime I'm enjoying my studio time as much as I can; if only I could get into the studio in peace; now 20 months on and still fighting for studio time; I expected retirement to be relaxing not stressful.

Kind regards, Colin.

Hi,

Will I ever get peaceful studio time without problems. three days ago as usual I was very busy in the morning but in the afternoon decided to swap our Skoda Yeti wheels front to back a job I've done many times. I'd completed the job and was putting the spare wheel back into the boot well; there's an hinged floor covering which I struggled to keep open with my head as I struggled to get the heavy wheel into position; in the center of the well beneath the wheel the tools like jack and wheel wrench are stored making it even more difficult; as I struggled the wheel suddenly dropped crushing the third finger on my left hand drawing blood.

Yeti bite_0001.webp

It sure hurt but I could still bend the finger so hospital wasn't needed; a few hours later I couldn't use the finger at all but it's prevented me playing the violin being too painful; I'm now trying to get into the studio but what next?

I have however tried using the headphones but it was so frustrating; I was trying to play karaoke fashion through the laptop; I kept missing the starting point meaning having to start over or let the tune play full length; the earphone and violin cables added to the frustration so I needed to try something else. Whilst grounded with my finger hurting I decided to try again and downloaded a number of YouTube violin solos; this time though I wanted to reduce their length into bite sized pieces using Audacity; 40 secs would be long enough allowing me to listen then try to copy with it on repeat so it would play over and over; now for the next problem; Audacity didn't recognize the file type which I've been changing to MP3 but then as usual ran out of time so this afternoon I'll find out if I've succeeded; if not I'll simply keep trying until I do succeed.

I want to do lots of computer backing up of files and pictures; I've had a brand new internal 500GB SSD for some time but gaining access to the tower is long winded having to move my heavy desk in order to disconnect all the cables; I decided to by a Caddy which arrived yesterday so I eagerly connected it up and although it lit up "Device Not Found" I lose the will to live.

This morning I've bought through eBay a brand new 1TB SSD but an external one; another problem ahead? Lets see what else is going to mess with my life. Bird just flown into the closed kitchen window with a loud thud. GRRRRR.

Kind regards, Colin.

I don't quite know where to start, with sympathy.
Finger injuries happen to me from time to time, which means no guitar playing for a while. There's still keyboards and drums though.
You might want to try windows media player for violin practice. You can put the cursor back to the beginning, without having to wait.
New hard drives need initializing before you can format them. Look in 'computer management' in windows tools. It will show all hard drives, including the un-initialized.
You can right click on the un-initialized, and select 'create volume'. Then it should become visible in its own right.
External SSD drives usually come pre-formatted, with a few files already on them. External is the way to go for backing up.
Had a couple of birds, and bees and wasps appearing in my wood-burner, after coming down the chimney.
Just get all the bad luck out of the way, then its plain sailing.

Hi,

Many thanks Raymond for your informative reply. I've been looking at administrative tools etc but the drive isn't recognized so something is wrong; not a problem now though having a new external drive to arrive; thank you.

I do use Windows Media Player a lot also VLC but I'd need to rearrange the studio to get the laptop within reach; what I've done instead though I spent a while yesterday afternoon and resited the car radio this more to my liking; the car radio volume is much greater than the laptop volume and less messing around; the car radio has a repeat function which is very useful for what I need although I do have to copy to memory stick first.

I hope your birds and wasps weren't too much of a nuisance; I'm usually very gentle not wishing to hurt anything but wasps I kill on sight; they are the skin heads of the insect world; I once got a wasp in my shirt sleeve and it stung me twice before scarpering since then wasps are treated as enemies.

I wired in an extra 16 x 13A sockets Eight shown another eight near the other end of the studio. I've also bought an Embossing Label Maker when it arrives I'll label each plug. I've got two of these 12V car radios; one in the studio one in the workshop I think they only cost around £12 each through eBay brand new but I had spare speakers. I made a simple wooden surround for each leaving the back open for ventilation and cable exit.

I've enjoyed rare studio time this morning; firstly playing my electric Yamaha YEV-104 then I thought I'll play my other violins so pulled out the Hidersine Vivente that I've not touched for months; as expected it was way out of tune so I attached an electronic tuner; the D string proved difficult to adjust but then it suddenly snapped it's end puncturing my thumb; I'm having a good week so far; firstly the spare wheel injuring my third finger now a punctured thumb.

I've just bought a medium Pirastro Evah Pirazzi D string from The String Zone costing £28.61 inclusive. I'll be interested to learn how this sounds once it settles in.

Thanks Raymond I wish all the bad luck would leave me alone after all the only thing I want to do is play my violins in peace.

I received an email which gave me a shock this morning; good job I was sitting down.

1686307917219.webp

E-ON email stating electricity estimated £163 cheaper over the next year; I can then afford more violin strings. :ROFLMAO:

Kind regards, Colin.

I'm afraid I don't ever change strings until they break. One bass guitar still has the original strings on it - 1974 I bought it. I once replaced my stage bass strings with fluorescent ones that lit up. Didn't sound as good, but looked great.
Hope the finger heals quickly.
Mentioned your woes to my piano tuner. He suggested a practice routine that is a bit odd, but I get it. Make sure you have a keyboard in the room that can play any sound as long as it is vibrato free - piano, guitar, harp - that kind of sound. pick a note letter name - any one APART from open strings. Silently, place your left finger on the right note - then twang it and at the same time, witjh your right hand, reach over and press the keyboard key for the same note. See how close you are, and make a record of if you were too flat or too sharp. Adjust your left hand position until it's perfect - repeat and repeat until muscle memory starts to take over. Then do something else, and return later and test again. eventually your finger positions will get closer and closer to perfect.

Hi,

What a great idea rob; many thanks I'm sure I can live with that as I understand it and I'll give it a go; I'm not tone deaf just have a very poor memory; muscle memory though I can learn much better than trying to learn by sound. I'm as keen as ever to play my violins and in spite of constant daily problems I'm now gaining more studio time in fact I'm free to enjoy a practice this evening. I need to set up my mini Yamaha keyboard.

I don't want to adopt your problem rob with an hacker messing up all my files; the 1TB SSD arrived today and this afternoon I tried to get it working; my desktop recognized it without problem but when it started to load it locked solid at 18% regarding cloud & social media etc which I never use; I left it connected whilst I had tea and have just had another go at loading it; I used Task Manager to shut it down then restarted the installation; this time it went to 100% and I'm now able to transfer a great deal of data and images; whoopee something finally going in my favour.

I've just been out cleaning up after the pigeons AGAIN. I've evicted them from our giant blue spruce tree and I was considering felling this tree then it dawned on me it's the big mature oak tree overhanging the patio etc providing toilet seats so I think in Autumn the oak tree will be felled which carries a bonus; millions of acorns and leaves no longer causing work; I won't fell it with leaves still on because the leaves add so much extra weight; hopefully this will get rid of the ongoing pigeon problem also make our lives a lot tidier; I'm going to get studio time eventually whatever it takes. This afternoon I've been in the workshop moving a heavy bench to a wall side; now almost 76 I've decided to finally sell more of my biggest machinery like my radial arm saw and metal lathe; this really deeply saddens me but better do it now whilst I'm fit rather than wait and perhaps leave my wonderful wife with a big liability if she succeeds me; morbid but this is real life and my wife hasn't a clue as to what my machinery does apart from seeing what I've created over the years.

No longer do I wish to spend many hours isolated especially during our very long winters restoring machines; in future I want to be in comfort in the studio; the bungalow and gardens are in excellent condition so should only need low maintenance in future; I need to sort my life out before it's too late.

Thanks again rob; brilliant suggestion.

Kind regards, Colin.

Hi,

Having spent this morning cleaning and taking images of my Lorch Lathe I've now posted it for sale. It's a gorgeous English summer day; hot with lovely sunshine. 30 minutes ago full of enthusiasm I thought time to get into the studio for an hours violin practice no other pressing jobs to do; whoopee.

Into the front room my lovely wife asked if I'd put a YouTube movie on TV for her so I picked up the remote and immediately Virgin Media struck "No signal try again later" the big key in my back started to wind up; ten minutes later after switching everything off then back on still no YouTube so it was a movie on normal TV for her and I headed to the studio; looking out of the kitchen window the pigeons had been messing all over the handrail and patio; for the millionth time I went out and cleaned up; if I don't keep cleaning the sun bakes it on.

At last I made it to the studio; unusually for Yorkshire it was hot in there but I switched everything on and got seated; ten minutes later I left the studio totally disgusted; the big key in my back wound to maximum; my Yamaha YEV-104 simply refused to play as it normally does; I tried applying rosin but it sounded terrible; I thought time to quit before I explode.

The new pirazzi D string arrived this morning so rather than add it to the Hidersine Vivente I'll try it out on the Yamaha and transfer the D string from the Yamaha to to the Hidersine; not yet though I'm wound up; I'll wait until I calm and cool down. Timing is always perfect to prevent me getting into the studio in peace; I could scream.

The pigeons are now really getting through to me so I'll measure the height of the mature oak tree they're using as a toilet seat with a view to getting rid of the tree; I'm fed up of constantly moaning and more fed up of constant problems every time I want to get into the studio; please stick with me however long it takes; I've got staying power and a very stubborn streak; TV; pigeons or anything else torment me on a daily basis but I'll win in the end;.

Kind regards, Colin.

Hi,

Will my bad luck ever let up;

1686409377446.webp

I just tried to reply to an email and this is so typical of anything I want to do. I've never known VM to be as bad as it now is; it's rubbish.

Will I make it to the garden to measure the oak tree?

Kind regards, Colin.
