Recorded this in my 30 x 30 studio just finished in Sept. My cousins band (high school kids). This was my first ever recording in the studio which the live room is roghly 30 x 20 with 10' ceilings (1 large open room). I need to add accoustic treatments and I need to make some partitions to make it better. But thats all in due time. We recorded this wide open. I mean it was loud. Basically a live track. Only added tracks was doubling background vocals. We did a total of 6 originals that way and all sound pretty descent for one take recordings. Bleed through wasnt bad for it being gig level loud and all playing at the same time. Used a Macki Onyx 1640 with firewire and Traction sdoftware. Will be doing another session this Sunday with them and we will be doing individual tracks. Let me know what you think of it. Remember this is basically a live recording. Let alone my first ever attempt at the mixer and software.

It's not bad for a live recording...the overall sound isn't bad...the vocals could be raised a little...and the drums tend to blend in a bit...but overall not bad...Decent tune too...

You need to close mic each instrument and the drumkit to eliminate as much of the room as possible - it sounds like a commercial for room treatment; really boomy and mushy.

The band isn't bad from what I can tell.

Yes I did adjust vocals through my control room monitors and didnt try it in other stereo systems. The room need acoustic help but I cant see paying all that money for foam. Anyone have suggestions on cheap treatments. Also the drums are close miced. The two overheads when in seperate pattern about 4 feet apart and maybe 6 1/2 feet off the ground. I just need to tinker with placements. I need to take some pics and see if anyone can give advise on cheap wall treatments. Once I at least get some wall partitions it should help. And recording one insturment at a time will help too. Like I said it was probably 110 decibals in the room.

Room treatment is probably more important than any piece of equipment you can buy. Once you have a good room, you'll wish it was the first thing you did before even buying that really good mic.

I know you were joking ( I see the smiley), but don't look at it like just "buying foam". Look at it as a small investment for a huge return.

Check out the "STUDIO BUILDING AND DISPLAY" section in the forum for some creative and maybe less expensive ways to do it.

The recording is really verb'y, but it sounds like youve got a good natural sounding room.

Foam will make the problem 100x worse.

You want lots and lots of fiberglass and/or mineral wool. See RAMI's tip above.

Will post some pictures later. I need to fax over to Auralex the design sheet of my room and see what they come up with. Probably $2k worth of foam needed. Im need to be in the foam business.
