Here's a sample using a Gibson SG-I (500T humbucker), Marshall dsl50 head (with the drake trannie), 1960B 4x12 cab (on casters) loaded with jensen mod12/50's (bottom right speaker), Senn 421-md II, RME Multiface II Converter, and was tracked 5 times panning hard mid center with no eq or anything.

Huh?? That a bit unusual...

...or are you micing guitar cabs with your dynamics and vocals with your LDCs

I am speaking guitar cab mic'ing only. I'm not a singer and do very little vocal recordings.

May want to get some of the other gentlemens advice on the vocal.

WOW.

Tracked 5 times?

Sounds amazing.

You literally recorded the same part over 5 times in a row ?

yes

get a real thick wall going on. you have to be careful though. Try and get them tight as possible. If you have a real intracate rythm guitar part, it can be tough to get them tight.

I'm a big fan of the Smashing pumkins. I read where Corgan tracked the guitar on the song "soma" like 40 - 50 times.

Where do you pan all those takes? I'm gonna guess evenely spread across the stereo field? Otherwise you need some with equal "thickness" to balance it out?

yes, hard left / mid left / center / mid right / hard right

I don't understand this question. But It is purely a tone your after. You can also use different amps or different guitars on the different takes to get a particular sound.

But if your after a lofi sound you may just want to single track the guitar and maybe pan it differently during the song using automation. For example, single track a guitar part for the verse and pan it right only. Then bam.... in the chorus put 2 or 3 tracked guitar part covering the spectrum thus making the chorus hit you in the face.

my reference to thickness was answered by your response to panning =D

I was commenting that if you track 5 guitar takes you would have to pan it evenly across the stereo field. Otherwise if you put more guitar in the left channel [for example] , you would need something in the right channel that would balance the thickness [maybe the wrong word?] of the guitar. But seeing as you pan it evenly, then this seems moot.

I'm gonna try building a wall tonight =D

Also, just ordered my dual 72, will post up some samples later in the week for those interested
