Vintage vs. New microphones

I'm wondering how the older microphones - say 1960s, 1970s - compare to the products made today. I know that in the electric guitar world, for example, some decades or periods are good, some bad, and the graph goes up and down over time, depending on the brand and who owned it when; but generally, quality is pretty good now. Is it possible to generalize about quality between the two time periods, say in mics $75 to $135 (today's new prices.)

Thanks for any advice.

First off - you couldnt buy microphones for $100 (in 2003 dollars) in 1960. To answer your question (sort of) - every mic model is different. You cant just generalize time periods with mics. The mics which have stood the test of time obviously stand the test for a reason - they sound great. Now, when a manufacturer decides to "remake" an older model, the sound almost always changes and usually people like the vintage mic better. Why? Because that was the model which sounded so good that it stood the test of time. Does that make any sense?

Yes, it makes sense. Thanks for your reply.

Regarding price, let's say we're talking about today's mics in that price range and vintage mics of similar type in their day.

No one "created" power - but the concept was first used somewhere around the first transatlantic telephone cables I believe
