i saw a friend of mine today that i used to play music with several years ago. he has some nice vintage guitars and hasn't really kept up with the values of them. he asked me what i thought they were worth and i told him i would run it by this board to see what y'all thought.

he has:
a 1958 les paul special (im not familiar with that model)
it is almost like a 58 les paul jr. but with 2 pickups (p-90's) instead of 1*very good shape*
a 1967 gibson ES 335 (says he still has the paperwork that came with the guitar) *excellent shape*
and a 1972 gibson les paul custom in tobaccoburst *excellent shape*

i told him the truth...that im a fenderman and don't know alot about gibson values and i would ask around on the net and see what you guys thought.

gibson values

Since a couple of those guitars were probably exposed to dangerous levels of radiation from above ground atomic tests, he should put them in hermetically sealed packaging, and send them to me for remediation. No, don't thank me, it's for the greater good, really!

Heh, seriously though, if they are in as good condition as described, and have their original cases, then that LP special could be worth 4 grand, the 335 could be worth 2500 to 2900, and the LP Custom (didn't know they came in Tobaccoburst in '72?) around 1400.

George Gruhn does appraisals via mail or online at about $25.00 per guitar. Check him out at www. gruhn.com.

If you have any trustworthy vintage guitar dealers in your neck of the woods, he could bring them there too.

He might want to check out the Les Paul Forum too, at www. lespaulforum.com, lots of knowledgable folks hang out there. Just don't talk politics with them.

thanks for the reply.

like i said i don't know what old gibsons are worth but i had a hunch the '72 LP would go around $1500 and the 335 around $2500 to 3500, but i would have thought the '58 LP special would have been worth big bucks. i haven't seen the '72 in some time, he said it was tobacco...that mayt not necessarily tobacco burst...tobacco brown maybe
