vfo8 live recording

What mics would be good for using with my fostex vfo8 to record live shows at clubs. I recorded last week with shure 58's cause that's all I had available. I'd like to buy something good. Also should I be miking close to the stage or back by sound guy. I did it by sound guy last week sounded ok.

You should probably get some omni's. The Berringer ECM8000 condensors are a good deal for $70 a pair. The 58's are dynamics and not very good for ambient recording. Dynamic mics are best for close micing of loud sources.

Placement will depend on what sounds best for the room. Usually the mixer is a good place to start but some clubs put the mixer in a location that is more convenient for the customers than the sound quality.
