I am very happy with my VF160 in every respect except one - the eq below 400 Hz is only a shelf eq. This is inadequate. I need to be able to give a boost at 100 Hz while giving a cut at 200 Hz, and this eq will not permit that. Does anyone have any recommendations about what outboard eq (reasonably priced - i.e. below $200.00) I should buy?

low eq

Take a look at the following link:

You will find an in-depth discussion of using vf16/160 effects parameters to eq the low end. I have not tried this approach but you might find it helpful. You might also search the forum archives on vf16.com. The low end eq issue is often mentioned and there are some suggestions on outboard units. From what I remember, Behringer units are mentioned frequently in the under $200US range.

The vf16/160 lo eq limits force you to think creatively about eq. As a result, you often use a combination of tools, including the roll-off switches on some mics or controlled proximity effects on vocals. If you transfer recordings to a PC/Mac you can also attack the eq in sequencing software or a plugin.
