VF08 Digital I/O & Vari Pitch

I have my VF08 connected to Pioneer's PDR-W739 CD Recorder via the SPDIF/Digital I/O on both....

when i turn on the vari pitch on the VFO8, it cuts off the sound to the recorder...i thought i just had a crappy cord..but my nice new expensive one does the same thing..

i give up..anyone know what dumb thing i'm missing here?
 
Changing the pitch changes the sample rate (and by definition, the clock rate as well) and obviously, the Pioneer can't read digital input at varying clock speeds.

this is all pretty new to me so nothing is obvious to me right now...i'm learning..obviously
