Well, I think the VS machines all use data compression, unless you use only half the tracks. The 840 might be the one that always uses data compression. I've read that people much prefer the uncompressed sound of the VF-16. The BR8 is a beginner machine, only 8 tracks. Does it also use data compression? I'm thinking that it does. Unfamiliar with the vm200.

I use an old dmt series but switch HD's all the time. I don't know if the new machine uses scsi or ide. Mine's ide. It gets to be a pain in the butt, powering down, unplugging the machine, unscrewing the panel, unplugging ide cable,removing the hd while trying to balance the machine on one knee, reaching for the other hd, putting in it's silicone gel case, you get the picture . . ., do you or anyone know if theres an outboard adaptor that lets you run a cable to like an A-B switch that lets you switch hd's without having to take apart the machine every time?

timbea - I own both the BR-8 and VF-16. Which one is best for you depends a lot on what kind of recording you plan on doing. The BR-8 only records 2 tracks at once, but gives you 8 for playback. Compression? Yeah, it uses some Roland/Boss compression scenario (as does the VS840), but listen for yourself at http://www.mp3.com/merrycherry and decide what the sound is like. For my ears, I could hear 'something' different, but was very pleased with the overall sound. The BR-8 is also easier to work with and understand than the VF16. The zip disk recording time limitation stinks.
The VF16 gives you uncompressed recording (8 tracks at a time unless you've got an ADAT setup, then you 16 at once)and is therefore much more practical for recording live/full band set-ups. The effects aren't as good as on the BR-8 and it certainly is not easier to use. However, it does have better data storage options, you can swap out the hard drive once it's full, and it sounds fine. (www.mp3.com/zumsteg has a song called 'What you're looking for' that was recorded using the vf-16).
