Hey, me too. I can test it with my voltimeter and see if that is the cause.

On the hard drive, there is a connector for power. It has +12,-12,+5 and gound. If your power supply to the hard drive crapped out, or if a pin in the connector is not making contact, the drive will not work. The fastest way to find out if the drive is good is to simply plug the drive into a computer. Power up the computer and feel/listen to hear if the drive spins up. If it does, there is something wrong with the Fostex, if it does'nt, the drive crapped out.

I gave it to an I.T. guy at work to test for me today and that is what his first comment was. Hope it works.

This sucks. The muse is here and the ideas are flowing and no way to capture them.

Have you tried to format a "new" drive in the machine yet?Hopefully it's just the drive gone bad and you can install a new one and be on your way.....hardrives are cheap these days....I know it sucks to lose the stuff on the old drive but the best case scenario is for the drive to be bad and NOT the Fostex.

No. That is where my real problem lays. I have not used this machine lately and got behind on updating it. Fostex says the newer drives require the latest updates. So I guess I would have to buy one of the drives on the older list on their site which have less GB space.

The puter god still has the drive. He told me tonight that the it is f*cked but he is going to try and recover my music for me. He is really good at what he does so I,ll let him play with it for a while.

Tonight I went out and tried to buy a new hard drive for this old thing. 40GB is now the industry standard. 20GB is all my unit with it's lack of updates can handle.

Do any of you have any links to hard drives{20 GB} that are compatible with the VF-16 ?????

This is the confirmed media list over at vf16.com :

The software updates are located here if you ever wanna upgrade your version on the Vf.I upgraded awhile back to the latest version and it's really easy......you just need an SCSI Zip ir Jaz drive to load the new version onto your vf with......took about 90 seconds to update. The updates are on the right hand side of the page.

Thanks Kramer. I have located and bookmarked those sites for the future.
Now if I could only find a new drive for this doorstop I would be happy. My vacation started yesterday and I am going crazy already.

Actually if you have (AND DON'T QUOTE ME ON THIS) version 1.10 or later, you can upgrade via CD.

I quoted you on it and actually you CANT upgrade via CD.:D

The VF 16 never had a version 1.10 nor does it have an internal CD Burner.(you have to have at least version 3.10 to do the software upgrade by the EXTERNAL Plextor CD Burner)

You're thinking of the VF 160.;)

Bugger, my reformatting worked, the F***ing machine didnt...
one last go, I'm also gonna chance it with a new drive, fifty english quid, and if that dont work I'm a gonna smash it into a million pieces and besiege Fostex with dodgy emails til hell freezes over.

novatech.co.uk I use them a lot, very reliable, dunno if they ship to U.S. THOUGH!

Ah yes...that is what I get for not reading the whole thread. I have always just assumed they were the exact same machine sans internal CD-RW. I'll shut up now! :D

Take lots of pictures man. I am about to do the same thing.
I don't need a paper weight that big. Fostex is REAL slow getting back with answers to my questions.

Don't listen to Fostex !!!

I broke down and went to my local computer geeks store today. Tried drives that were not on the Fostex list of compatibility. A couple did not work. Most did work.

My machine with it's lack of updates should not recognize anything over 30 GB according to those retarded hillbilly mental patients working at Fostex.
A Maxtor 6E04 40 GB works perfectly on this thing on the original version 1.10 (yea I know ha ha):)

$124.10 U.S.

Now if the ideas would start flowing again...

:)

I may be a bit excited to get back to recording again but...

How F*CKING long does it take to format a 40 GB hard drive. It's been going for an hour and I still have 35000 MB to go.

hey ginzoo,
If you hit a brick wall over here with the Fostex just hit the VF 16 Users Forum. There are a lot of posters over there and it's all VF 16/160 related. It is the absolute best source of info on the web for VF 16 users.

Thanks again Kramer. I have not been there in a long time but have got tons of info from the cool folks there. A bit nicer than some of the ass... uhm guys here huh ??? :D Kidding :)

Yeah, they're a kinder gentler crowd over there compared to the assho...um "guys' on this board.:D

Actually, the Fostex forum on this site is the "kinder gentler" side of homerecording.com.:D

6 hours to format but thats OK. Everything works just fine. Lots faster at 7200 RPMs. Hope my I.T. guy can recover my songs on the old drive.

Now back to that jazz tune I was working on. Just wish I could remember the notes that were flowing the other night.:(
