a couple of weeks ago i opened a thread asking how to import from the vf16 to p.c.

well i figured out how to do it (thanks to ye) but left it alone coz i was waitin to get some software

the otherday i got cubase sx3 so went back to the jaz drive and loaded what was on it into cubase and that was ok, i formatted the disk and went to save another song to the jaz drive loaded it up into cubase and some of the wav files were ok but others were really messed up, the first song i saved to the jaz disc were poping up in bits and pieces and other times there would be white noise or bloops on the files and a lot of pieces missing, really weird shit,

so i formatted the disc again saved another song loaded it into cubase but the same story again that first song i saved was a dylan cover and it had harmonica and i could hear the harmonica coming through on the third song i saved,

i tried a new disc and the same thing noise and bloops were appearing on the files,

i had a look at each file of all the songs i saved in sony soundforge and the files that had the noise and bloops instead of looking like normal wav files these were like blocks, the files that were mixed up from the different songs look like normal files

so what the fuck is up with that???

is the jaz drive fuct, i dont think it is because the first song i saved came out perfect no noise or bloops and all of the files were complete, i reackon the problem must be in the formatting stage,

hope you can understand what im trying to explain,
anyone come across this problem before and what has to be done....

Are you formatting the disk every time you load a new song onto it? Perhaps it just wore out. Especially since you said that you were getting parts of one song coming through on another.
I am not really familiar with a jazz drive, but I don't think you have to format it every time you use it.

ya, i would save whats on the drive to the p.c. and format the disc straight away and use it again whenever

would it matter how many tracks you save at one time from the vf16 to the jaz drive, when i'm saving i always select all tracks

The only limit I know of is the size of the drive. As long as you can fit them all on there, download away.

This lack of a direct connection to the pc was exactly why I stayed away from the vf series when I was looking for a digital multitracker. I ended up going with the MR-8, which for all its faults, it's really easy to transer the tracks to pc. I think the vf was designed to allow you to "mix" and "master" onboard. Personally, I don't feel the effects and such are good enough for that.

I hope you figure out what is going on. I suspect your drive may be worn out...

cheers man,

ya its a big down fall with the vf16 alrite, but it can be worked around,
so its not so bad, i'll have to pick up another jaz drive.....

It might not be the Jaz drive! Other users have posted about playback problems on the VF: losing bits of a track, or having bits of a track play in the wrong song. They weren't exporting tracks, but otherwise they had the same weird shit as you have experienced. When this has come up it usually turns out to be a corrupt 'management' file on the Fostex or a by-product of a full hard drive. Answer seems to have been: backup the VF hard-drive and format it.

Does the Jaz do FDMS backups OK?

not sure any time i tried to do FDMS back up it said wrong disc (but at that time i did'nt know how to format the jaz disc to fat16) then i was told not to use the FDMS but format the disc to fat16 and do it by wav

how do i back up the vf hard drive and format it

Backup just means get copies of your tracks off the VF's HD: Format means use the Format command from the Setup menu on the VF to wipe the HD clean.

Your problem is going to be getting the tracks off the VF in one piece: the reason I asked about using FDMS backup is that it may allow you to do that. But you're gonna need a lot of disks (cos FDMS cannot be copied to PC - at least not from a jaz disc).

If you can copy tracks in WAV format they can be transferred to PC for storage (then you don't need so many jaz discs). Have you tried selecting a few tracks at a time?

orc tks for the feedback man, ya out of the three songs i tried one uses a total of 16 tracks, on this song i tried copyin 4 tracks at a time but the end result was the same...

there is a jaz drive on ebay, bidding is ending tomorrow, i'm gonna get it, at least then i'll know weather or not its the jaz drive thats causing the problem, if its not the drive and i can get this problem sorted out it will come in handy coz at the moment im using the one drive between the vf and the p.c. which is a pain in the arse...

since last post on this problem i formatted the drive on the vf and put a new song together using all track, saved it to the jaz drive but still the same shit bits of the song missing and some of the old songs turned up aswell...

it cant be the vf that was causing this to happen since all the old stuff has been deleted, it has to be the jaz drive or the disc's, and i think im fromatting them right...

i got another jaz drive on ebay should have it during the week, at least i will know if its the jaz thats causing the problem...

It might be worth noring that at soem point Fostex stopped recommending the Jaz for this stuff. They shifted to the Zip drive.

well i hope it works coz it cost me 65euro and i bought a usb to scsi cable which cost 21euro, the first jaz drive i bought cost me 50euro but i got 5 discs, scsi cable, and scsi card so it was'nt so bad

im totally pissed...

i saved 4 songs one after another on the new jaz drive i got yesterday and the shortest song which is just under 2min and about 60mb was the only one that saved without any glitchs...

i cant figure out why this happening...

what a waste of money these jaz drives are all in all they cost me about 130 to 140euro now im gonna have to get a zip drive i dont know who im more pissed off with fostex or iomega although other forum users did warm about the jaz being a load of shite...

its just one massive vicious circle...
